Box Score CHENEY, Wash. -- Sacramento State shot just 36% from the field, and was outrebounded, 44-29, as the Hornets fell at Eastern Washington, 75-62, on Thursday evening at Reese Court.
Tonight marked the first leg of a stretch that will see the Hornets play three road games over a five-day stretch. That includes matchups on Saturday at Idaho, and Monday at Northern Arizona.
Sacramento State (5-8, 1-5) has traditionally had a tough time against Eastern Washington, and tonight was no different as the Hornets were limited to 29 points in the first half, and 33 in the second half. The Hornets led for just 35 seconds of the contest, and their field goal percentage was the second lowest mark of the season. Sacramento State finished the game 19-for-53 from the field and 6-of-19 (32%) from the 3-point line.
Eastern Washington won for the fourth time in five games, and improved to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The Eagles are 2-1 on their current four-game homestand.
The Hornets committed a season-low eight turnovers, but the poor shooting and large rebounding disparity were too much to overcome. Of Eastern Washington's 44 rebounds, 14 came on the offensive glass resulting in 17 second chance points. Sacramento State was 18-for-24 from the free throw line, and was down single digits (67-58) with 3:23 remaining.
Eastern Washington shot just 43% from the field, but went 11-for-24 (46%) from the 3-point line and 8-of-9 (89%) from the free throw line. The 11 3-pointers are the most allowed by Sacramento State's defense this season. Entering tonight's game, the Hornets were allowing just 5.3 made 3-balls per game on 29% shooting by the opposition.
Four Hornets scored in double figures, led by Zach Chappell's 17 points and five assists. The guard finished 5-for-10 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Forward Cameron Wilbon scored in double figures for the fourth straight game, finishing with 13 points and five rebounds. William FitzPatrick buried 4-of-7 attempts from distance on the way to 12 points, and Bryce Fowler had 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Center Jonathan Komagum had six points and eight rebounds, and has now tallied at least six rebounds in five straight, and nine of the 11 games he's appeared. Teiano Hardee rounded out the six Hornets in the scoring column with two points and five boards.
All five Eastern Washington starters scored in double figures, led by Rylan Bergersen's 15 points. Angelo Allegri finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds. All 14 of those boards came on the defensive glass.
Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday at Idaho. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
