TRACK & FIELD ADDS 19 TO 2021 SIGNING CLASS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State track and field program added 19 student-athletes to its 2021 recruiting class it was announced today. The group joins nine others who committed to the Hornets earlier this year.

"This is a large class with a lot of diversity and talent." Director of Track & Field Kenny McDaniel said. "Anytime you bring in such a large class like this it shows how hard my staff worked during the recruiting cycle. This is one of the largest classes in school history and I'm excited to get this group on campus in August to start their academic and athletic endeavors."

Combined with the early signees, the recruiting class covers nearly every event as there are 13 jumpers, seven sprinters/hurdlers, five distance runners and two throwers.

Women

Natalie Barr (High Jump, Santa Rosa, Calif./Montgomery HS)

  • Will graduate from Montgomery HS in Santa Rosa, Calif., in 2021.
  • Placed third at the Redwood Empire Championships in the high jump and was 11th at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions as a sophomore in 2019.
  • Set her PR with a clearance at 5-02.00 at the 2019 Meet of Champions.
  • Was the North Bay League champion that same season and was second as a freshman.

Assistant Coach Carl Caughell: "Plugging an athlete like Natalie into the Sacramento State track team will be beneficial for all parties involved. I am eager to get started with training Natalie, a tall athlete that can move!"

Jaliah Brice-More (Sprints, Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek HS/Sioux Falls)

  • Comes to the Hornets from the University of Sioux Falls where she had bests of 13.34 in the 100 and 26.31 in the 200.
  • Fastest 100 came this spring at the Wildcat Classic.
  • Qualified for the 2021 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships in the 60-hurdles and was part of the team's 4x400 relay.
  • Competed in the pentathlon during the 2020 indoor season and scored 2,789 points.
  • Graduated from Bear Creek HS in Stockton, Calif., in 2019.
  • Qualified for the California State Championships in the 100 as a sophomore, junior and senior.
  • Was the San Joaquin Athletic Association champion in the high jump and placed third in the 100 and 200 in 2019.
  • Was third at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet in the 100 and eighth in the 200 that same year.
  • As a junior, she third at the masters meet in the 100 and fourth in the 200.
  • Was the SJAA champion in the 200 and was second in the 100 as a sophomore.
  • Set PRs in both events that season by running 11.83 and 24.38 at the section Div. I meet.

Assistant coach Kim Graham: "Jaliah is a very versatile sprinter who will help us in a lot of areas. She's a transfer that is originally from California and is looking forward to be closer to home and being back to some warmer weather."

Madison Burciaga (Sprints/Middle Distance, Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton HS)

  • Will graduate from Hamilton HS in Chandler, Ariz., in 2021.
  • Fastest times from the early part of her senior season are 58.19 in the 400 and 2:17.93 in the 800.
  • In her junior season, she competed in the 100, 200, 400 and 800.
  • As a sophomore, she finished first in the 800 at the Arizona State Meet of Champions with a PR of 2:16.21.
  • Was also first at the Chandler City Meet.
  • Was third in the 400 at the Chandler City Meet following a PR of 57.46.
  • Finished second in the 800 and sixth in the 200 at the Chandler City Meet as a freshman.

Assistant coach Aaron Braun: "Maddy's passion for the sport of track & field, and her willingness to work hard on both the anaerobic and aerobic energy systems required to have success in the 800 will have her develop into a strong and versatile athlete for our program."

Jayla Flowers (Jumps, Burbank, Calif./Burbank HS)

  • Will graduate from Burbank HS in 2021.
  • Finished fifth at the California State Championships in the triple jump in 2019.
  • Set her PR at the state meet with a leap of 39-06.00.was fourth at the Southern Section Masters Meet, third at the Southern Section Div. I Finals and was the Pacific League champion that same season.
  • Also won the Pacific League title and was fourth at the Southern Section Finals in the long jump.
  • Was third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump at the Mt. SAC Relays.
  • Finished sixth in the triple jump at the Arcadia Invitational.
  • Set her PR during the season with a distance of 18-00.00.
  • Has finished first in four meets this spring in the triple jump and was second in one other.

Assistant Coach Carl Caughell: "Jayla is what Coach McDaniel calls an athlete that comes "batteries included". We have a workhorse joining our program, who's ready to win, has a champion mindset and has proven success at the state level."

Brionna Gray (Sprints/Hurdles, Ontario, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga HS)

  • Will graduate from Rancho Cucamonga HS in 2021.
  • As a junior in 2020, she set PRs in the 100-hurdles (16.63) and 300-hurdles (48.80).
  • Also raced as part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
  • Finished third in the Palomares League in the 300-hurdles as a sophomore.
  • Was fifth at the Mt. Baldy League finals in the same event as a freshman.

Assistant coach Kim Graham: "Brionna is a hurdler from Southern Cal that will be coming to us with a lot of upswing. I'm happy to help her continue to develop in both hurdle races."

Alizabeth Huerta (Jumps, Livngston, Calif./Livingston HS)

  • Will graduate from Livingston HS in 2021.
  • As a sophomore, she was the Tri-Valley League champion in the 200 and 400 in the 200, 400, long jump and triple jump.
  • Was the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. V champion in the 400 and long jump.
  • Best marks were 25.65 in the 200, 58.13 in the 400, 18-01.00 in the long jump and 36-02.25 in the triple jump.

Assistant coach Carl Caughell: "Lizzie is an all-around athletic champion. You don't always see a jumper/sprinter go to the lengths of training with the cross country team, but she is a rarity in that sense. She will surely have success in any event she competes as a Hornet."

Daja Johnson (Sprints, El Sobrante, Calif./De Anza HS/San Jose State/Chabot JC)

  • A 2018 graduate of De Anza HS in Richmond, Calif.
  • Qualified for the California State Championships in the 100 as a senior.
  • Was the TCAL champion in the 100 with a PR of 12.16.
  • Finished second in the event at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions.
  • Also won the TCAL title in the 200 that same year.
  • Placed fourth in the 200 at the NCS Meet of Champions with a PR of 24.82.
  • Was the TCAL champion in the 100 as a junior and placed second as a freshman and third as a sophomore.
  • Began her collegiate career at San Jose State where she competed for the Spartans in 2019.
  • Qualified for the Mountain West Indoor Championships in the 60 where she ran 7.91.
  • Was also part of the team's 4x400 relay and ran the 200 during the year.
  • Best 200 time was 25.86 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational.
  • Outdoors, she ran 12.39 in the 100 at the Mt. SAC Relays and 25.79 in the 200 at the Woody Wilson Classic for her best times.
  • Also ran the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Assistant coach Kim Graham: "Daja is a very good short sprinter from the Bay Area that will be able to come in and contribute right away in the sprints and relays."

Katrina Kohlmeyer (Distance, Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate HS/Diablo Valley JC)

  • Competed for Diablo Valley JC in Concord, Calif., for two years.
  • Qualified for the California State JC Cross Country Championships in the fall of 2019.
  • Finished ninth at the CCCAA Northern California Championships that same season.
  • Graduated from Northgate HS in Walnut Creek, Calif., in 2018.

Assistant coach Aaron Braun: "I believe Katrina is still raw as a distance runner. She only did cross country in high school, swimming during the spring instead of running track. She started running track at DVC, but has had few training partners and limited race opportunities. I believe she'll have a lot of improvement training with our women's team."

Tiana Oliver (Distance, El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge HS)

  • Will graduate from Oak Ridge HS in 2021.
  • Has already set PRs in the 1600 (5:18.91) and 3200 (11:24.37) in limited action this spring.
  • Finished fourth in the Sierra Foothill League finals in the 3200 as a sophomore and also advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I Championships that same season.
  • Was the league champion in the 1600 as freshman and was second in the 3200.
  • Also ran cross country for the Trojans.qualified for the California State meet as a freshman and sophomore.
  • Finished 14th at the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships as a sophomore and was 16th as a freshman.
  • Fastest 5K of 18:46.0 came during her senior season.

Assistant coach Aaron Braun: "Tia's work ethic stands out to me. When COVID started cancelling seasons last spring, Tia started training harder than ever despite the lack of racing opportunities. I'm excited for that work ethic to rub off on our program."

Rylee Panquerne (Sprints, Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup HS)

  • Will graduate from Puyallup HS in 2021.
  • As a sophomore in 2019, she set her PR by running 12.84 at the Puyallup All City Meet.
  • Dastest 200 was 26.48 at the SPSL 4A Championships where she was fourth.

Assistant coach Kim Graham: "Rylee is a motivated sprinter from the state of Washington that is looking to develop and contribute in the sprints and relays."

Tamia Ramos (Jumps, University Place, Wash./Curtis HS)

  • Will graduate from Curtis HS in University Place, Wash., in 2021.
  • Ran sprints and competed in the jumps for the Vikings.
  • Owns PRs of 16-08.25 in the long jump and 36-04.50 in triple jump.
  • Ran the leadoff leg of the 4x100 relay team which finished first at the Washington state championships in 2018.
  • Competed in the Junior Olympics in Sacramento in 2019.

Assistant coach Carl Caughell: ""Already familiar with competing in Sacramento, Tamia is ready to fit in alongside the championship program like Sacramento State track & field."

 Jenny Rehnvall (Throws, Folsom, Calif./Folsom HS)

  • Will graduate from Folsom HS in 2021.
  • Placed ninth at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meetings the shot put and also qualified in the discus.
  • Had a shot put of 38-10.50 to win the Sierra Foothill League title that season.
  • Also claimed first place at the SFL meet in the discus with a season-best of 109-03.
  • In 2020, she had a discus throw of 116-10 to place second at the Glenn Poole Invitational and was also second at the Sacramento State High School Track Classic.
  • Has finished first in both the shot put and discus in all three meets to start her senior season.

Assistant coach Kyle Lille: "I have watched Jenny since she competed at the Hornet High School meet in 2019. She brings a ton of potential and will be vital part of are program for years to come."

Abby Sheets (Jumps, Milwaukie, Ore./La Salle Prep)

  • Will graduate from La Salle Prep in Milwaukie, Ore., in 2021.
  • Has high jumped 5-04.00 multiple times in 2021.
  • Has a PR of 5-06.00 while competing for her summer club.
  • Finished fourth at the Oregon 5A State Championships in the high jump in 2019.
  • Set her PR by clearing 5-04.00 that same season.
  • Was second at the NWOC District Championships.
  • Finished sixth at the Oregon 5A State Championships during her freshman season.
  • Also competed in the heptathlon during her high school career.

Assistant coach Carl Caughell: "Trust is the first word that comes to mind with Abby. Flipping over a bar backwards, takes a lot of trust. It's not always when you come across an athlete that asks the right questions, but Abby is already at that level, which will make for an exciting Hornet career."

Elizabeth Switzer (Pole Vault, Burbank, Calif./Burroughs HS/Glendale JC)

  • Spent two years at Glendale JC.
  • Set the school record by clearing 11-08.00 at the Battle of the Regional Meet in 2020.
  • Competing unattached in 2021, she set a PR of 12-01.75 at the Chula Vista High Performance meet.
  • Graduated from Burroughs HS in 2018 where she was named the all-area Girls Track Athlete of the Year after tying for the Pacific League title with a vault of 11-00.00.
  • Was a gymnast until switching to the pole vault as a junior in high school.

Assistant coach Carl Caughell: "Elizabeth is a problem solver, a licensed pilot, and a highly motivated individual. It will be a special moment when we get Elizabeth in the Hornet uniform over some top-10 record bars."

Viviana Valenton (Distance, Livermore, Calif./Livermore HS)

  • Will graduate from Livermore HS in 2021.
  • Fastest times came during her freshman season in 2018 where she ran 2:20.63 in the 800, 5:0 8.66 in the 1600 and 11:46.08 in the 3200.
  • Qualified for the California State Cross Country Championships as a junior where she had a 5K PR of 19:18.6.
  • Was seventh at the North Coast Section Championships.
  • Ran 18:08.6 over the 3-mile course for her career best.

Assistant coach Aaron Braun: "Viviana is a talented runner who I can tell is very close with her family. I believe she will really thrive in our family-like team atmosphere in both cross country and track & field."

Men

Jack Charlton (Jumps, Bothell, Wash./North Creek HS)

  • Will graduate from North Creek HS in Bothell, Wash., in 2021.
  • Finished second at the Sea-King Championships as a sophomore in the 110-hurdles.
  • Ran 15.50 at the Kingco Championships for his PR.also had bests of 11.93 in the 100m, 162-04.75 in the javelin and 6-00.00 in the high jump.
  • Placed sixth at the Washington State Combined Event Championships in the decathlon after scoring 5,244 points.
  • Also played football and basketball for the Jaguars.

Assistant coach Carl Caughell: "Jack fits the mold of a generational multi within Sac State's program. Moving south from Washington to Sacramento like others before him proved to be a great choice. As a multi-sport athlete, the focus on track & field in college will be a smooth transition."

Miles Grant (High Jump, Portland, Ore./Catlin Gabel HS)

  • Will graduate from Catlin Gable HS in 2021.
  • In just one meet this spring, he set his PR in the high jump (6-06.00).
  • Placed fifth at the Oregon State 3A Championships as a sophomore after clearing 6-00.00 in the high jump.was the 3A-SD1 District 1 Champion in the high jump, was fifth in the triple jump and ninth in the long jump that same year.
  • As a freshman, he advanced to the state meet in the high jump after winning the district title.

Assistant coach Carl Caughell: "Miles and I have been on the same wavelength since early in the recruiting process. He already carries the mindset of a great collegiate jumper, and it's showing early during his senior season with his new best of 6-foot-6."

Garrett Hedlund (Distance, San Jose, Calif./Pioneer HS)

  • Will graduate from Pioneer HS in San Jose, Calif., in 2021.
  • Has competed in races ranging from 400-3200 meters.finished second in the Bay Valley Athletic League finals in 2019.
  • Ran 1:57.31 in the 800, and 4:30.42 in the 1600 for his PRs during that year.
  • Was third in the BVAL Finals in the 800 as a freshman.
  • Also ran cross country where he had a 5K best of 16:22.8 at the BVAL Championships in 2018 where he was third.

Assistant coach Aaron Braun: "I really like Garrett's versatility. He has the speed to become a strong mid distance runner in college, and also the strength to be an asset to our cross country team."

Jake Slade (Distance, Grass Valley, Calif./Nevada Union HS)

  • Will graduate from Nevada Union HS in 2021.
  • Has already set PRs in the 800 (2:00.58), 1600 (4:30.85) and 3200 (9:31.70) as a senior.
  • As a sophomore in 2019, he qualified in the 1600 for the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. III Championships.
  • Was fourth in the 1600 at the Foothill Valley League in the 400 and was fifth in the 800.
  • Also competed in cross country for the Miners where he was a state qualifier as a sophomore .
  • Finished first in three races in an abbreviated senior season.
  • Qualified for was second at the Sac-Joaquin Section finals in 2019.
  • Ran 16:12.7 at the state meet for his best 5K time.

Assistant coach Aaron Braun: "Jake has what it takes to immediately impact our men's team. I can tell he will fit in wonderfully with our returning guys, who are all excited about working hard and taking their training and racing to the next level."
