ROCKLIN, Calif. — Rachel Victor placed third in the women's race and Shane Marshall was fifth to in the men's competition to lead the Sacramento State cross country teams at the William Jessup Invitational on Saturday morning. The meet was first race for the Hornets since the NCAA West Regional in November of 2019.
Victor was one of three Sacramento State women to finish among the top 10 in the 5K race. She ran 18:54.4 which left her just over 30 seconds behind Saint Mary's Rayna Stanziano who was the winner in 18:21.7. The third-place showing was the highest of the senior's career and marked the first time she has led the Hornets in a race.
Freshmen Hailey Rutter and Danielle Gee finished in ninth and 10th place, respectively, in their first collegiate meet. Rutter posted a time of 19:30.6 while Gee crossed in 19:32.9. Rosemary David (11th, 19:34.4) and Ariana Barrett (12th, 19:37.5) were close behind as the Hornets had the foursome finish withing seven seconds of one another.
Saint Mary's won the women's team competition with 24 total points. Sacramento State was second with 36 while Pacific scored 75 to finish third.
Marshall, the most experienced runner on the men's roster, ran 26:41.4 over the 8K course. The finish was his highest since wining the Nevada Twilight Race to start the 2019 campaign. Junior college transfer Ruben Garcia was seventh in 26:59.9 in his Hornet debut. The team was also represented by freshmen Aiden Maddison (14th, 27:31.6) and Jacob Polivka (17th, 28:29.2).
The men's team only had four runners in the meet and did not register a team score. Saint Mary's easily claimed the title with 15 points while William Jessup had 50.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Big Sky Championships on Saturday, Feb. 27, in Riverdale, Utah.
