DUNCAN, MARSHALL GUIDE CROSS COUNTRY AT BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS

RIVERDALE, Utah — The Sacramento State cross country teams wrapped up an abbreviated spring season on Saturday at the Big Sky Championships. The Hornet women were led by Cagnei Duncan while Shane Marshall had the fastest time for the men.

Sacramento State finished 10th in the women's 5K race and the men were ninth in the 8K race. Northern Arizona captured the women's team title with 27 total points while Weber State was second with 80. The biggest upset came in the men's race where Southern Utah was first with 35 points. NAU, which is ranked second nationally, finished second with 38 points but did withhold many of their best runners in preparation for the NCAA Championships.

Duncan ran 19:06.9 in her first meet of the year to lead the Hornet women and place 42nd overall. Freshmen Hailey Rutter and Danielle Gee placed 50th and 58th, respectively. Rutter ran 19:28.8 while Gee had a time of 19:45.8. The women also counted times from Rachel Victor (60th, 19:52.1) and Rosemary David (66th, 20:11.0).

The Hornet men were represented by five runners at the race with Marshall running 25:45.0 to lead the team for the second time in as many meets this year. The next four runners in the lineup were each making the Big Sky Championship debut. Freshman Aiden Maddison ran 26:42.5 to place 55th. Junior college transfer Ruben Garcia was 62nd in 27:16..6. Freshmen Nick Carter (67th, 27:45.0) and Jacob Polivka (68th, 27:46.5) completed the lineup.
