SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the 2020 Big Sky Championships on Saturday, Feb. 27, in Riverdale, Utah. The meet, which is closed to spectators, will begin with the women's 5K at 12:15 p.m. PT. The men's 8K contest will get underway at 1 p.m. PT.
After the normal fall schedule was cancelled due to COVID-19, Sacramento State has competed in just one cross country meet during 2020-21. The Hornet women finished second at the Jessup Invitational on Feb. 6 where they were led by Rachel Victor who finished third. The men's team was paced by Shane Marshall who finished ninth.
The Big Sky Championships will be held in Riverdale, Utah for the first time since 1996 — Sacramento State's first year in the Big Sky.
"Our men's and women's teams are very excited for the opportunity the Big Sky Conference has presented for us to compete in a championship meet Saturday," Sacramento State head cross country coach Aaron Braun said. "I'm looking for my athletes to run focused, and for one another. This group has faced a lot of adversity over the past year; and racing a 5k/8k in the snow against top notch competition will present a new, fun challenge for them."
Northern Arizona is the top ranked team in the conference in both men's and women's. The NAU men are currently second in the USTFCCCA coaches poll while the women are 16th. Southern Utah and Weber State are also receiving votes in the men's poll.
The meet will be the final cross country competition for the team this year as the NCAA will not conduct regional meets in 2020-21.
