BERTUCCIO DOMINATES, SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH SPLIT VS. CALIFORNIA BAPTIST

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State right-hander Marissa Bertuccio was dominant in the opening game of the Hornets' doubleheader split with California Baptist on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Bertuccio pitched the Hornets to a 3-1 victory in Game 1, before the Lancers scored seven runs in the seventh inning of a 9-3 win in the nightcap.

Today marked the season opener for Sacramento State (1-1) while California Baptist moved its record to 3-1. CBU, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, opened its season yesterday with a doubleheader sweep of UC Davis.

Bertuccio, who established herself as the team's ace last season as a freshman, was up to the task yet again in today's opener. She allowed just four hits and one run with five strikeouts over seven innings. After yielding a solo homer to Abby Robertson in the third inning, Bertuccio retired 13 of the final 15 batters of the game. She threw 103 pitches, and faced just six batters over the minimum.

Offensively during the doubleheader, sophomore Lewa Day reached base safely in six of her seven plate appearances, finishing the day 2-for-3 with two runs, four walks, a double, home run, stolen base and a pair of RBIs. Other Hornets who combined for multiple hits during the two games were Samantha Paris (2-for-3 with a HBP), Charizma Guzman (2-for-4 with a double and RBI), Katie Vretzos (2-for-6 with a double and RBI) and Carley Morfey (2-for-6 with a double, walk and two RBIs).

In the opener, after CBU opened the scoring with its third-inning blast, Sacramento State scored twice in the bottom of the third and once more in the fourth. In the third, after Guzman and Haley Hanson led off the inning with singles, they both eventually came around to score on a Vretzos sacrifice fly and a two-out double from Day. The Hornets' fourth inning run came via two-out, RBI-double from Guzman scoring Morfey.

Bertuccio got the complete game win while Giana Lopez (0-1) picked up the loss, allowing six hits and three runs over six innings. Guzman finished 2-for-2 with a run, stolen base and an RBI.

In the nightcap, Sacramento State took a 3-2 lead into the final inning before the Lancers combined for seven runs and six hits against two Hornet pitchers in the seventh. CBU scored single runs in the first and second innings off starter Morfey, before the Hornets tied things in the third on a two-out, RBI-single from Morfey scoring Day and Vretzos.

Sacramento State then took the lead in the fifth on a towering fly ball from Day that sailed well over the left field fence. The homer was her first of the season a year after homering once every 12.5 at-bats. The Hornets missed a golden chance to add to the lead in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out, but could not score.

That set up the big seventh inning for California Baptist.

Kerisa Viramontes (2-0) got the win for the Lancers, allowing six hits and three runs while working around six walks over seven innings. Sacramento State stranded 10 runners on base. Carley Morfey (4.1 ip), Alyssa Nunez (2.1 ip) and Skylar Mitchell (0.1 ip) each pitched. Nunez took the loss, and the appearance for Mitchell was the first of her collegiate career.

Day reached base safely in all four plate appearances (homer and three walks) and Parish went 2-for-3.
