Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State used a 14-0 run late in the first half, and led by double digits the final 26:22 of the contest on the way to a convincing 75-63 win over UC Davis on Tuesday evening at Golden 1 Center.
The Hornets were in control the majority of the contest, and opened up a lead as large as 24 points in the second half. Sacramento State defended well all evening, limiting UC Davis to 39% shooting (21-53) from the field and 23% (4-17) from the 3-point line. The Aggies were forced into 17 turnovers, and Sacramento State held a sizable advantage in points off miscues (21-10). The Hornets also outrebounded the Aggies, 42-35, and limited UC Davis to just four offensive rebounds and six second chance points.
Sacramento State (3-2) has now defeated the Aggies three straight times at the downtown Golden 1 Center, and owns a commanding 69-50 record in the all-time series between the rivals. The series began in 1948, and is the Hornets' longest standing rivaly against any opponent. Each of the last two wins over the Aggies have come by double figures.
UC Davis, which opened the season with a 72-69 win at Utah State, dropped to 2-2 with the loss. The Aggies were playing for the first time in six days.
During the pivotal 14-0 run, four different Hornets scored, including William FitzPatrick (6), Bryce Fowler (4), Jonathan Komagum (2) and Deshaun Highler (2). FitzPatrick scored six straight points during the spurt, including back-to-back 3-pointers. The run stretched an 18-15 lead all the way to 32-15 with 3:37 left in the first half. The Hornets cruised the rest of the way.
Sacramento State didn't shoot great - 42% from the field, 29% from 3-point line - but the defense and rebounding keyed the win. Two Hornets had double-doubles, and one of those players narrowly missed a triple-double.
Fowler, a fifth-year senior, had a monster game with 21 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and one turnover in 31 minutes. He shot 8-for-15 from the field and converted on five free throws. Fowler has led the Hornets in scoring in all five games this season, and now leads the team with an average of 16.2 points per game.
Komagum, a transfer from Toledo, provided energy and had his best game as a Hornet with 13 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in 31 minutes. That included nine points and eight rebounds in the second half. He shot 4-for-6 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line.
Also in double figures was point guard Zach Chappell who posted 13 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals. FitzPatrick added nine points (all on 3-pointers), four rebounds and two steals, and forward Cameron Wilbon posted eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Highler had five points, three rebounds and three assists in 31 minutes, and Teiano Hardee, Marcus Greene and Chris Holley all had two points.
