VOLLEYBALL PLAYS WELL IN ALL PHASES, SWEEPS PORTLAND STATE AT HOME

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State played well in all phases, sweeping past Portland State (25-13, 25-21, 25-19), in a match that lasted just an hour and 13 minutes on Tuesday evening in the Nest.

The Hornets played one of their best matches of the season, registering 41 kills, 40 assists, nine aces, 47 digs and 11 blocks in just three sets. Sacramento State hit .252 while limiting PSU to a .122 hitting percentage. The Hornets passed well all evening, allowing the Hornet middles to have huge matches. In fact, the middle blocker tandem of Cianna Andrews (11 kills, 3 blocks, .474 hit%) and Kalani Hayes (9 kills, 7 blocks, .529 hit%) combined for 20 kills, 10 blocks and a massive .500 hitting percentage.

Sacramento State controlled the match throughout as neither of the three sets were all that close. Portland State's largest lead was five points early in the second set. With the score tied at 21-21 in that second frame, the Hornets closed on a 4-0 run which included back-to-back combo blocks from Hayes and Caitlin Volkmann.

Tonight marked the first leg of a season-long five game homestand that includes three matches this week. The Hornets will play three times over a five-day span, including Thursday vs. Northern Colorado and Saturday against non-conference opponent Boise State.

Sacramento State improved to 9-10 overall, 4-5 in the Big Sky Conference and 6-4 at home. The Hornets also snapped Portland State's seven-game winning streak. In fact, the Vikings (13-7, 7-2) hadn't lost since opening league play with a four set loss on the road to first-place Weber State on Sept. 23. Portland State had been one of the hottest teams in the Big Sky, entering the evening with a 7-1 league mark and second place in the league standings.

Tonight marks the first of two meetings with the Vikings over a 17-day span as the teams play again in Portland on Nov. 4.

The Hornets got contributions from nearly everyone, not just Andrews and Hayes. Bridgette Smith posted her seventh double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs. Volkmann had five kills and five blocks, Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin five kills and three blocks, and Macey Hayden posted two aces, nine digs and three blocks. Those three, combined with Hayes and Andrews, all had at least three blocks despite the match lasting just three sets.

Libero Caty Cordano led the team with 11 digs, setter McKenna Smith had 15 assists, two aces and seven digs, and fellow setter Ashtin Olin registered 18 assists, an ace and five digs.

The Hornets host Northern Colorado on Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by a home matchup with Boise State on Saturday at noon. Saturday's game is part of a tripleheader on campus that will see Men's Soccer play at 3 p.m. and Football at 6 p.m.
