Box Score RENO, Nev. -- Pacific's Bethany Hammer threw a two-hit shutout to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over Sacramento State on the second day of the Wolf Pack Softball Classic on Saturday morning at Hixson Park.
The Hornets dropped to 13-10 overall and 0-2 at the three-day tournament. Sacramento State lost to Nevada yesterday by a 9-0 score and has now been shut out in back-to-back games for the first time all season. In fact, prior to the tournament, the Hornets had been shut out just once during the entire season.
Sacramento State will conclude the tournament tomorrow with games vs. Pacific at 11:30 a.m. and Nevada at 4:30 p.m.
After the Hornets got a pair of hits in the first inning to put runners at first and third with two outs, Sacramento State did not get a hit the rest of the game against Hammer. In fact, when Charizma Guzman advanced to third base in the first inning, that marked the only runner to advance past second all game for the Hornets.
Hammer (4-0) allowed just two hits (both singles) while striking out six and throwing 114 pitches over seven innings. The lone two hits for the Hornets came from Guzman and Mo Spieth in the first inning.
Sacramento State right-hander Marissa Bertuccio (5-1) threw well, but received her first loss of the season. The freshman right-hander allowed eight hits and three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out five over six innings. Bertuccio's ERA is still just 1.62 and she has a 6.7-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio this season (47 strikeouts, 7 walks).
The Tigers scored two times in the third inning and once more in the fourth. Seven different Pacific players had hits, led by Hannah Krosky who was 2-for-2 with a run, walk and RBI.
