DOMINGUEZ, TURNER WIN EVENTS DURING DAY THREE OF BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Victories from Michael Turner and Candice Dominguez highlighted the third day of the 2017 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hornet Stadium.

Along with the individual victories, the Hornets advanced six men and 10 women into event finals on Saturday.

Through the completion of the events on Friday, Weber State holds a narrow lead in both the men's and women's team standings. The Wildcat women have scored 56 points and are followed by Sacramento State (50), Montana (41), Eastern Washington (32) and Montana State (31). In the men's race, Weber State has 44 points to lead the Hornets by one. Northern Arizona (34), Montana State (31) and Southern Utah (28) complete the top five.

Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer. The first running event will start at 12:15 p.m. and the meet is scheduled to conclude with the men's 4x400 relay at 3:35 p.m.

Men's Field Highlights

Michael Turner continued Sacramento State's dominance in the outdoor long jump. Turner won his second outdoor title following a win in 2015 and did it in record breaking fashion. The senior jumped 25-08.00 to move into second place in school history and into ninth all-time in the Big Sky record book. Turner's mark also places him into a tie for 16th place in NCAA Div. I this year. Since 2000, Sacramento State has now finished first in the men's long jump 11 times at the conference meet with six different individuals claiming a title.

Cory Barger added a fourth-place finish in the event to give the team 15 points in the event. Barger jumped 24-03.50.

Kyle Peterson and Kyle Carrillo placed fourth and fifth in the discus. Peterson threw 168-02 while Carrillo had a PR of 164-09 which was the 10th best in school history.

Sacramento State also received team points from Peterson in the hammer. Peterson finished sixth at 177-04.

Women's Field Highlights

Candice Dominguez added a Big Sky outdoor championship to her resume which already included an indoor title. Dominguez tied the school record with a make at 5-10.50 and won the competition by 1.25 inches. She converted her first three jumps of the event and was successful on six of her first seven attempts.

Danielle Brandon and Hayley Ann Cabullido placed second and third, respectively, in the pole vault. Brandon and Eastern Washington's Erin Clark each cleared 13-00.75 during the evening but Clark did so on fewer attempts and was awarded first place. Carbullido shattered her previous best of 12-01.50 which came in 2015 by jumping 12-10.75. That height not only provided the team with six additional points, it moved her into fourth place in school history.

The final points of the night came from Jelaia Jones in the shot put. Jones had a put of 46-05.50 to place sixth.

Men's Track Highlights

Andre Lindsey and Aric Walden posted the two fastest times in the qualifying heats of the 110-hurdles. Lindsey ran a wind-aided 14.08 to easily win the second heat by two tenths of a second. The wind was 3.5 meters per second which exceeds the maximum for school record purposes but is allowable for the national rankings where Lindsey is now tied for 51st. Walden won the first heat by running 14.30 into a slight headwind of -0.3 m/s.

Turner completed his busy day by advancing in both the 100 and 200. The senior ran 10.75 in the 100 and will be seeded seventh for the final. He also had a mark of 21.43 in the 200 to earn the fifth seed.

Freshman Alec Foster moved on in the 400 with a mark of 48.40. Foster was second in the opening heat.

Andrew Stich, who placed eighth in the decathlon, will also score for the team in the 400-hurdles. Stich ran 54.54 to claim one of the eight berths into the finals.

Women's Track Highlights

Sacramento State will be well represented in both the 100- and 400-hurdles finals. Kristin Robinson, Artearra Coffey and Kassandra Corrigan each punched their ticket in the 100H. Robinson ran 14.12 to win the third heat and earn a top three seed. Coffey was third in the second heat in 14.27 and Corrigan was third in the first head in 14.34.

That time jumped her to ninth in school history. Angelica Cusworth completed the trio with a PR of 1:01.73 and will be seeded sixth in the final.

Ashley Kittle and Denise Reis each set career bests in the 800. Reis moved into ninth in program history with a time of 2:09.29. Kittle ran 2:09.44. Both will be a part of the final on Saturday.

Amari Jones ran 12.10 to place second in the first heat of the 100. Jones' time will seed her seventh in the final.
