ACEVEDO LEADS DEC, CORRIGAN SECOND IN HEPT AT BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Alec Acevedo is in first place in the decathlon and Kassandra Corrigan is in second place in the heptathlon after the first day of action at the 2017 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hornet Stadium. The two events will conclude on Thursday and the main program of the meet will take place on Friday and Saturday.

Acevedo scored 3,809 points during the first five events to build a 179-point lead over Montana's Brenan Thurber-Blaser who entered the meet as the conference leader. Acevedo ran 11.20 on the 100 to start the day and moved into the lead with a long jump 23-01.75 which was the longest of the day. The senior ranked second with a shot put of 40-11.50 before clearing 6-02.00 in the high jump. He ended the day by running 49.59 for the second fastest time in the day.

Max Jette is seventh with 3,513 points and Andrew Stich is 15th after scoring 3,217 points on Wednesday. Jette, who's competing in the decathlon for the first time this season, ran 11.67 in the 100 and long jumped 21-05.50. He followed with a shot put of 37-10.50 before setting a season best by clearing 6-04.25 in the high jump. Jette wrapped up his day by running the 400 in 51.18.

Stich had marks of 11.53 in the 100, 20-00.25 in the long jump, 33-07.25 in the shot put, 5-07.00 in the high jump and 49.91 in the 400.

The top six athletes in the heptathlon are separated by just 200 points after four events. The event is led by Idaho State's Bailey Woodbury with 3,177 points. Corrigan is only 30 points back after amassing 3,147 during the opening day. Elizabeth Venzon is fifth at 3,040, Julia Grimm is sixth with 3,011 and Ivie Eboigbodin is 17th with 1,976 points.

Corrigan ran 14.45 in the 100-hurdles before clearing 5-04.50 in the high jump. Her shot put of 34-08.25 came before she ran 25.06 to rank second in the 200. Venzon opened with a time of 14.88 and high jumped 5-04.50. She had a shot put of 34-09.75 to rank fifth during the day and ended with a 200 of 25.63.

Grimm moved into contention with a record-breaking performance in the high jump. After running 15.34 in the 100-hurdles, she cleared 5-08.00 for the best mark in the day and giving her 891 points in the event. That mark also set the Big Sky Championshipr record for a high jump in the heptathlon. A shot put of 34-00.25 and a 200 of 26.32 concluded her day.

Freshman Ivie Eboigbodin stumbled over the final hurdle in the opening event but continued in the competition. Eboigbodin was able to regain her composure after the fall and was credited with a time of 23.16. She went on to have marks of 4-10.50 in the high jump. 32-01.50 in the shot put and 26.47 in the 200.

Montana's Erika McLeod, who was the defending champion in the heptathlon and won the pentathlon during the indoor season, did not clear a height in the high jump and eventually withdrew from the competition.
