WOMEN'S TENNIS DEFEATED AT #18 CALIFORNIA

BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 18 California earned the doubles point and won all six singles matches in straight sets in a 7-0 win over Sacramento State on Wednesday in Berkeley.

California (12-3), which featured a nationally-ranked doubles pair and two ranked singles players, improved to 7-0 at home this season while Sacramento State dropped to 9-14 overall this year.

The Cal doubles pair of Maya Jansen and Maegan Manasse, ranked No. 41 in the nation, opened with a 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot. The Golden Bears picked up a 6-2 win at No. 3 to clinch the point as the No. 2 match went unfinished with California holding a 5-2 lead.

Stephane Lin gave the Bears the first singles point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. A 6-2, 6-1 win from Denise Starr at No. 2 put the home team a point away from victory and Maya Jansen completed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 to clinch the match.

The Hornets did win four games at each of the three other singles spots. At No. 1, junior Ana Loaiza Esquivias faced No. 9 Karla Popovic and took three games in the second set in a 6-1, 6-3 loss. Senior Andie Mouzes won a pair of games in each set at No. 3 against No. 98 ranked Olivia Hauger and freshman Sofia Gulnova had a 6-1, 6-3 finish at No. 5.

Sacramento State plays its final home match of the season hosting Long Beach State on Friday. Due to forecasted rain the match will be played at Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center at 1 p.m. The Hornets will honor their three graduating seniors prior to the match.
