Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a tightly contested match Cal Poly earned the doubles point and grinded out three singles wins to top Sacramento State, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon.
Sacramento State (8-12) battled for three-set wins at the top two singles spots and won at No. 6 but Cal Poly (2-11) took the other three singles matches and had the doubles point to earn the win.
Hornet senior Andie Mouzes and freshman Karina Vyrlan had a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Cal Poly's Abigail Bacharach and Susanne Boyden. The Mustangs had a 6-1 win at No. 3 and took the No. 1 match 6-2.
Cal Poly earned straight-set wins at No. 4 and 5 singles to move a point away from victory, but freshman Sofia Gulnova earned a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 6. After dropping the first set Vyrlan battled back to defeat Seriana Saltzen 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
Mouzes and Louise Oxnevad played two very competitive sets that both went to tiebreakers at No. 3 but the Cal Poly senior pulled out a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7) win to clinch the team victory. Junior Ana Loaiza Esquivias and Boyden went to a third set at No. 1 as well with Loaiza Esquivias earning a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 win to improve to 15-3 at No. 1 singles this season.
The Hornets return to Big Sky play with matches at Idaho and Eastern Washington this weekend.
