STOCKTON, Calif. — A career best round of 69 by Devyn Fitchhorn highlighted the third round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational for the Sacramento State men's golf team on Saturday at The Reserve at Spanos Park. The Hornets finished the tournament tied for 17th place with a three-round total of 300-290-296-886.
Fitchhorn broke his previous low of 70 after shooting 3-under par on Saturday. The sophomore started with two pars before a bogey on the par-4 12th hole. After another par, he dropped under par with three straight birdies. Fitchhorn started the streak on the par-4 14th and added birdies on the par-3 15th and par-5 16th. Five consecutive pars kept him at 2-under before he bettered his round with birdies on the par-3 fourth and par-5 sixth. Fitchhorn wrapped up his tournament with pars on either side of a bogey on the par-3 eighth. He shot 75-73-69-217 to tie for 37th in the tournament.
Eric Olsem had the second best score on the team during the third round, shooting 73 to finish the day at 1-over. Olsem was 3-under at the midway point of his round after birdies on the same three hole stretch as Fitchhorn and six other pars. He parred the first five holes on the front side to remain at 3-under but double bogeyed the par-5 sixth and par-3 eighth to take him to 1-over. Overall, Olsem tied for 42nd place at 73-72-73-218.
Sacramento State also counted a 76 from Ash Patel and a 78 from Wonje Choi towards its team total. Patel started the round with two bogeys and added two more after a pair of pars. His lone birdie on the back side of the course came on the par-5 16th but he followed that with two bogeys to make the turn at 5-over. The senior was 1-under par on the front nine. He was sparked by birdies on the par-3 fourth, the par-4 fifth and the par-5 sixth. Choi had 14 pars during his day with three bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-4 17th without a birdie. Choi tied for 99th with rounds of 79-74-78-231 while Patel finished in 106th place at 78-81-76-235.
A day after leading the team with a 1-under par round of 71, Zach Liberatore concluded the tournament with an 82. Liberatore had a birdie on the par-5 sixth, four bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey during the day. He shot 74-71-82-227 during the three day event to tie for 89th.
Individuals, Jeff Carr and Brandon Michaels shot 74 and 79, respectively. Carr had a slow start to his day with three bogeys on his first five holes. He earned his first birdie on the par-5 16th but made the turn at 3-over following a bogey on No. 18. Carr played his final nine holes at 1-under with the help of birdies on the par-4 first and par-5 sixth. He also had a bogey on the par-4 third. Carr tied for 61st after shooting 71-76-74-221 for his collegiate best.
Michaels was 4-over through five holes with a pair of bogeys and a double bogey. He then parred his next six before a double bogey on the par-4 third took him to 6-over. After two pars, he birdied the par-4 sixth but followed with a double bogey and bogey on the next two holes. Michaels ended his round with a birdie on the par-4 ninth. He shot 74-77-79-230 to finish in 98th place.
Santa Clara posted its third straight round under par and won the team title at 30-under. The Broncos shot 279-283-272-834 and finished four shots ahead of BYU. Patrick Fishburn shot 7-under (65) on Saturday to become the medalist. Fishburn had a total of 70-68-65-203 to stand at 13-under.
Sacramento State will conclude its fall season at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational in Hawaii on Nov. 3-5.
