SMITH FINISHES IN TOP 10 TO LEAD MEN'S GOLF AT RAM MASTERS

Hornets place ninth in first tournament of the year

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — For the second-consecutive day, Gabriel Smith led the Sacramento State men's golf team as he shot a 1-over par round of 71. The Hornets concluded the Ram Masters Invitational in ninth place with a three-round total of 288-291-289-868.
 
Smith had the top finish on the team, tying for ninth place overall. He began the third round on the 10th hole and was 1-over at the midway point following two birdies and three bogeys. He dropped into the red with an eagle on the par-5 first but returned to even with a bogey on No. 3. Back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 took him to 2-under before closing with a bogey on No. 8 and a double bogey on the par-3 ninth.
 
Patrick Dumag ranked second among Hornets during the round with a 2-over par 72. Dumag had three birdies, three pars and three bogeys over his first nine holes. He played the front nine at 2-over beginning with a bogey on No. 1. He dropped back to even with a birdie on the par-4 fourth but followed with a double bogey on No. 5.
 
Max Thomas and Zach Mate each shot 73 to complete the team total. Thomas had two birdies and five bogeys during the third round while Mate finished with four birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey.
 
Long Beach State finished two strokes ahead of host Colorado State to win the team title. UC San Diego's Davis McDowell was the medalist with rounds of 65-69-70-214 to finish at 6-under.
 
Sacramento State will return to Colorado to compete in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational on Sept. 29-30 in Erie, Colo.
