FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Sacramento State men's golf is tied for seventh place after its first day of competition during the 2025-26 season. The Hornets were led by Gabriel Smith who shot 68-70-138 and is tied for seventh place.
 
Smith was 2-under par during the first round with a team-high six birdies and four bogeys in the morning. He was even in the second round with four birdies and four bogeys. Smith is four strokes off the lead which is held by UC San Diego's Davis McDowell.
 
Max Thomas ranks second on the team at 5-over par and is tied for 28^th. Thomas was 3-over through his first five holes before playing his final 14 holes of the round at 2-under. His second round featured two birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys.
 
Zachary Matzke, who was competing as an individual, is one stroke back of Thomas. Maztke was 2-over in the first round with a birdie and three bogeys. He followed with two birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey in the second round to end at 4-over.
 
Jai Bahl and Zach Mate each closed the first day of the tournament at 8-over. Bahl shot 76-72 while Mate posted scores of 73-75.
 
The final round of the tournament will take place on Friday. Matzke will be the first to tee off at 6:12 a.m. PT while the rest of the team will start at 7:48 a.m. off the 10^th tee.
