Box Score GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Junior Ana Loaiza Esquivias won at No. 1 singles and teamed with freshman Karina Vyrlan to defeat the nation's No. 50 ranked doubles team but Fresno State earned the doubles point and five singles wins for a 6-1 victory on Sunday at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center.
The Hornets dropped to 1-1 after a 7-0 sweep of San Francisco in their season opener on Friday. Fresno State, a Mountain West Tournament finalist last year, won its first match of the spring season.
Loaiza Esquivias earned her second win at No. 1 singles in as many tries, rallying to top Galina Bykova 1-6, 6-5, 1-0 (10-8) in the top singles pairing. An all-Big Sky first team selection last season playing at No. 3 and 4, Loaiza Esquivias has won her first two career singles matches at the top spot.
She and Vyrlan opened the match with a convincing win at No. 1 doubles, beating the Fresno State pair of Georgia Lawson and Katerina Stloukalova, 6-2. The Bulldog duo opened the spring ranked No. 50 nationally in the preseason ITA Poll.
Sacramento State redshirt freshman Carolina Chernyetsky and senior Andie Mouzes narrowly dropped their doubles match at No. 2, 7-6, and Fresno State won 6-4 at No. 3 to claim the first point of the match. The Bulldogs went on to win the other five singles matches in straight sets, with Hornet freshman Sofia Gulnova putting up the greatest resistance in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Olivia Noble at No. 6.
The Hornets face Causeway rival UC Davis this coming Saturday at 1 p.m. with the match to be played on the Sacramento State campus tennis courts, weather permitting.
