GREELEY, Colo. — Max Jette finished second in the decathlon and Emelia Del Hoyo set a personal best to place fourth in the heptathlon during the second day of the Big Sky Championships on Thursday at Northern Colorado.
Jette charged up the standings during the final five events, finishing with 6,543 points which placed him just off the winning total of 6,555 from Montana State's Mason Storm. Dalen Hargett of MSU and Drew Thompson of Idaho were also in close contention as they scored 6,537 and 6,530 points, respectively.
Jette started Thursday by running 15.60 in the 110-hurdles and had a discus throw of 102-08. The sophomore began his surge in the pole vault where he cleared 14-01.25. That height was the second best among the 15 competitors and earned him 702 points. Jette added 542 points following a javelin throw of 153-09 which put him in position to challenge for the decathlon title. During the final event, the 1500, he ran 4:48.01 to score 631 points. However, Storm crossed the line in 4:39.22 to earn 54 more points that Jette and claim his first decathlon title.
Jette's finish was the best by a Hornet in the decathlon since Sam Schur earned the victory in 2011. He also earned eight points toward the team total in the meet.
In the hepathalon, Del Hoyo scored a career high 4,867 points which placed her sixth in school history. The freshman from Spain, started with a long jump of 18-03.25. She then threw the javelin 89-04 before ending by running the 800 in 2:27.14. Despite not having anything higher than the sixth best mark in an event on Thursday, Del Hoyo managed to move from fifth place to fourth with her consistency and earned the team five points.
Fellow freshman Caroline Combs completed her first collegiate multi by totaling 4,156 points to place 12th. During the day, Combs long jumped 16-08.50, threw the javelin 99-05, and completed the 800 in 2:34.61.
Montana's Erika McLeod maintained her first day lead to finish first in the heptathlon. McLeod totaled 5,541 points which was nearly 300 more than the closest competitor.
The main program of the meet starts on Friday with the men's javelin at 9 a.m. PT and concludes with the women's 10K at 5:30 p.m.
