SOFTBALL IN FIRST PLACE AFTER SWEEP OF NORTHERN COLORADO

Box Score

GREELEY, Colo. -- Sydney Rasmussen went 4-for-4 and Celina Matthias picked up a complete-game victory in Sacramento State's 4-1 win over Northern Colorado in the final game of a three-game Big Sky Conference series on Saturday afternoon at Butler-Hancock Softball Field.

The win allowed the Hornets (18-15, 8-1) to pull off the three-game sweep of the Bears, as Sacramento State was victorious by 11-7 and 8-5 scores yesterday. In addition, the Hornets now sit all alone in first place in the Big Sky standings as Weber State (7-1) had its game at Southern Utah canceled today because of rain.

Overall, Sacramento State is now a season-best three games above the .500 mark, and the Hornets' 8-1 record after nine Big Sky games is the team's best mark since the league added softball prior to the 2013 season. The Hornets opened conference play with a three-game home sweep of North Dakota and took two of three games at Montana last week.

Sacramento State's bats were lively during the three-game sweep as the Hornets hit .391 (36-for-92) with 23 runs scored, 21 RBIs, a .511 slugging percentage, .457 on-base percentage, and a .413 batting average with runners in scoring position (19-for-46).

Leading the way was Rasmussen who was retired just twice during the entire series. The true freshman shortstop finished the three games batting .833 (10-for-12) with three runs, two walks, four stolen bases and three RBIs. Rasmussen went 4-for-4 with a walk on two occasions during the series.

In addition, Matthias factored into all three decisions during the series, going 2-0 with a save while throwing 17.0 innings.

In today's game, the Hornets never trailed, scoring single runs in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The two teams combined for 19 hits (SAC 10, UNC 9) while stranding a massive amount of runners on base. The Hornets left a season-high 13 runners on base while Northern Colorado stranded 10 runners. Both teams left at least one runner aboard in every inning except the bottom of the seventh.

Sacramento State's Rasmussen (4-for-4 with a walk, triple and a run), Kailey Olcott (3-for-4 with a run, double and RBI) and Jessica Ravetti (2-for-4 with a run, double and RBI) combined for nine of the Hornets' 10 hits.

Ravetti got Sacramento State on the board in the top of the third after singling home Rasmussen. The Hornets made it 2-0 in the fifth after Ravetti and Olcott hit back-to-back doubles, the second of which scored Ravetti.

After Northern Colorado cut Sacramento State's lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Hornets scored once more in the sixth and seventh innings to provide the final outcome. A Sasha Margulies sacrifice fly scored Natalie Alas in the sixth, and an RBI-groundout from Alas allowed Olcott to score in the seventh.

Margulies saw her nine-game hitting streak come to a close after she went 0-for-1 with two walks and a sacrifice fly. Margulies (10) and Kortney Solis (9) both have lengthy streaks of consecutive games reaching base via hit and/or walk.

Matthias (12-9) went the distance, scattering nine hits over seven innings while walking three and striking out seven batters. She threw 147 pitches and worked her way out of numerous jams. That included a second and third with no out situation in the fourth, and second and third with one out in the fifth.

In conference play this season, Rasmussen (.563), Margulies (.500), Ravetti (.412) and Olcott (.412) are all hitting above .400. In addition, Matthias is 5-0 with five complete games and three saves in eight appearances against Big Sky opposition.

The Hornets will play four home games next week, beginning on Tuesday in the team's final non-conference matchup of the year against Santa Clara at 4 p.m. Sacramento State jumps back into Big Sky play on Friday-Saturday when the Hornets host Southern Utah for a three-game series.
