BERKELEY, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's and women's track and field teams each finished fourth at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge on Saturday at Cal.
The Hornet men scored 74 points and trailed Cal (252.5), New Mexico (83) and UTEP (80). The women amassed 70 points to finish behind Cal (168), UTEP (117) and UC Davis (95.5).
The men set three personal bests during the day and had five top five finishes. Freshman Kyle Peterson was third in the discus with a throw of 165-02 for the team's highest finish. Richard Casas was fourth in the shot put (52-09.50) and Paul Lyons was fourth in the 110-hurdles (14.05).
Senior Casey Wheeler and sophomores Austin Tinsley and Adrienne Jackson each set personal bests during the day. Wheeler ran 50.21 in the 400 to place sixth in the meet. Tinsley had a time of 14.65 in the 110-hurdles and Jackson triple jumped 46-11.75 to finish fifth.
In the women's competition, freshman Jelaia Jones finished third in the shot put and moved into ninth place in school history with a best of 46-02.50. Senior Stephanie Blumm finished fourth in the meet and set her career best with a time of 14.13 in the 100-hurdles.
Freshman Amari Jones and senior Hannah Edwards also set career bests. Jones ran 12.14 in the 100 and Edwards posted a time of 2:11.12 in the 800.
Overall, the women had five top five finishes. Danielle Brandon finished first in the pole vault after clearing 12-09.50. Abby Taylor was third in the long jump at 18-08.00 and Tyra Lassair was fifth in the shot put with a best of 43-08.00.
Sacramento State will host the annual Causeway Classic Dual Meet on Friday against UC Davis. The team will then end its regular season by hosting the Sacramento State Open on May 7.
