Box Score BERKELEY, Calif. — Cal's Taurie Pogue went 2-for-2 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the first inning, to lead the Golden Bears to a 6-1 victory over Sacramento State on Wednesday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.
Sacramento State (13-13) had its season-high tying five-game winning streak snapped while the Golden Bears improved to 14-12-1. In addition, Cal has now won seven straight games against Sacramento State dating back to the Hornets' last win in the series on March 24, 2009.
Hornet second baseman Zamari Hinton had her 13-game hitting streak snapped after going 0-for-3 against Cal starter Katie Sutherland-Finch. That 13-game hitting streak is tied for the fifth longest in the program's Div. I era (1990-pres.). Sacramento State did have five hits in the game, including the first home run of the season for Sasha Margulies, a solo blast with one out in the sixth inning.
The Golden Bears scored six unanswered runs off Hornet starter Celina Matthias, including three runs in the first inning, one in the third and two more in the fourth. Cal got things started in the first inning, when, after a single from Kylie Reed and walk to Lindsay Rood, Pogue eventually followed with a two-out, three-run homer to left field that proved to be more than enough run support for Sutherland-Finch.
Cal added a run in the third when Pogue connected on a sacrifice fly, and scored twice more in the fourth on an RBI-double from Danielle Bowers and RBI-single from Annie Aldrete.
Margulies' home run in the sixth inning was the sixth of her career, and the second round tripper hit by a Sacramento State player this season. The senior was the only Hornet with a multiple-hit game as she finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Kailey Olcott, Shelby Johnston and Natalie Alas each had a single for the Hornets.
Matthias (8-9) picked up the loss, as she allowed six hits and six runs (five earned) over four innings. Matthias, who had combined to walk just nine batters in her last 16 outings, walked four batters today. Of the four players Matthias walked, two came around to score and a third (Reed) was thrown out at the plate by Kayla Papez after trying to score from second base on a single. Matthias has now earned a win, loss or save in each of the Hornets' last 18 games.
Kaitlyn Yerby worked two shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Sutherland-Finch improved to 2-3 after allowing just five hits and one run with five strikeouts in seven innings. She threw 103 pitches.
Sacramento State will now jump back into Big Sky Conference play later this week when the team plays three games in Missoula against Montana. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday followed by a single game on Saturday. Both teams are 3-0 in league play thus far.
