WOMEN FINISH SECOND, MEN TIED FOR THIRD AT UCR SPRING CLASSIC

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Just three weeks into the regular season, the Sacramento State women's track and field team appears in midseason form as the Hornets finished second and set five school top 10 marks on Saturday at the UC Riverside Spring Classic. The men tied for third place in the team standings with both squads placing behind Cornell which won the team titles.

The Sacramento State women earned four event victories led by Danielle Brandon who cleared 13-04.50 to win the pole vault. That mark ranks second in school history trailing only Lizzy Norvell who was successful at 13-05.25 in 2010. Brandon's height is the best in the Big Sky Conference this year by 10.25 inches and places her 23rd in NCAA Div. I this year.

Candice Dominguez finished first in the high jump and matched her career best of 5-07.00. Dominguez set her PR last weekend at the Hornet Invitational which placed her seventh in the Hornet record book.

Nikki Pappelis finished first in the javelin and set her career best for the second consecutive week. Pappelis jumped to ninth in Sacramento State history with a throw of 135-03.

The final victory came from Haley Heinemann in the steeplechase. Heinemann ran 11:18.05 and now ranks ninth all-time at Sacramento State. She led a trio of Hornets in the top four in the event including Gracie Albano (11:27.06, 2nd) and Adrianna Royal (11:37.56, 4th).

Tyhana Cooper was sixth in the hammer at the meet but moved to ninth in the Hornet record book with a best of 173-05. That throw was over a 4-foot improvement for Cooper.

The women had 12 athletes finish among the top five in events at the meet. Along with the even wins, Stephanie Blumm was second in the 400-hurdles after running 1:00.58 for the second fastest time in the conference this year. Hannah Edwards was third in the 800 and now leads the Big Sky with a time of 2:12.25. Ashley Kittle was eighth in the meet but is now third in the league in 2:13.81.

Sacramento State had four other women meet the conference automatic qualifying standard. In the 100-hurdles, Kristen Robinson and Blumm ran 14.13 and 14.23, respectively. The pair also now lead the conference in the event. In the long jump, freshmen Abby Taylor and Emilia Del Hoyo met the mark. Taylor had a best of 18-10.75 while Del Hoyo finished at 18-10.00.

The Hornet men had six athletes reach the Big Sky automatic qualifying standard. Paul Lyons, who was the reigning Big Sky Track Athlete of the Week, improved his conference leading time in the 110-hurdles. Lyons ran 14.05 to place second in the meet and now leads the Big Sky by .55 seconds over Southern Utah's Devon Montgomery.

Casey Wheeler jumped to third in the conference this season with a season best time of 54.43 in the 400-hurdles.

In the field events, Cory Barger placed third in the meet and is now second in the league with a best of 22-11.00. James Kinloch and Kyle Peterson now rank second and fourth, respectively, in the discus. Kinloch threw 174-10 while Peterson had a long oof 165-09. Richard Casas completed the list of those who achieved the qualifying mark with a shot put of 53-11.25 which places him fourth in the Big Sky this year.

Daniel Onuoha matched Lyons for the best finish in an event at the meet. Onuoha was second in the high jump and Billy Eng was third after each cleared 6-06.75. Jelani Brice-Moore finish third in the 200 (21.8); Adrenne Jackson was third in the triple jump (45-11.25) and Trevor Hubby was third in the javelin (183-06).
