Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. – No. 20 Fresno State swept doubles and took five of six singles matches for a 6-1 win over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon.
In just its second home match of the season, Sacramento State (4-5) had to play at Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center rather than their usual home courts at Rio Del Oro due to rain. Fresno State (10-4) was the highest ranked opponent that the Hornets have faced this season.
Junior Andie Mouzes tallied a win for the Hornets at No. 5 singles. She won in straight sets, beating Fresno State senior Sofya Malysheva 6-2, 6-4 to claim Sacramento State's lone point in the match.
Fresno State won the five other singles matches in straight sets. Hornet senior Jennifer Ong pushed the first set to a tiebreak at No. 2 but Bulldog Sophie Watts pulled out a 7-5, 6-3 win. Facing the No. 34 ranked singles played in the country at No. 1 singles, Hornet junior Alina Soltanici took five games against Fresno State sophomore Mayar Sherif Ahmed in a 6-2, 6-3 loss.
The Bulldogs began the match with a sweep of doubles, winning 6-2 at No. 1 and 3 and 6-3 at No. 2.
Sacramento State returns to Big Sky play next weekend. In a rematch of the 2015 Big Sky Tournament championship match, the Hornets will host Idaho next Saturday at 10 a.m. before hosting Eastern Washington next Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will be played outside at Rio Del Oro, weather permitting.
