LAREDO, Texas — Heavy rain limited the Border Olympics golf tournament to just 36 holes but it could not cool off the play of Sacramento State's Aaron Beverly. The junior tied for second place overall and helped the Hornets to a seventh-place finish at the Laredo Country Club.
Beverly shot 71-66-137 and was three strokes behind medalist Haraldur Magnus of Louisiana in the individual standings. Beverly's score of 66 on Saturday was the lowest among the 101 individuals in the field during the round. His most recent effort comes less than a week after he was the medalist at the Sacramento State Invitational and set the Valley Hi competitive course record with a 64 in the final round.
The first round of the Border Olympics was cancelled on Friday and the teams were able to get most of the second round in before darkness. Play continued on Saturday morning before the scheduled third round. Beverly started the tournament with a 1-under par 71. He opened with a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole before adding three sets of birdie-bogey combinations in the rest of his round. On Saturday. Beverly did most of his damage of the par 5s. His lone bogey of the day came on his first hole (No. 4) but he recorded an eagle on the par-5 ninth and a birdie on No. 10 to move to 2-under. After six pars, he eagled the par-5 17th and then birdied the par-4 18th and par-5 first to finished at 6-under.
Connor Day finished second on the team and tied for 29th overall with two even-par rounds of 72. Day rallied from 2-over during his first round with birdies on Nos. 13, 16 and 17. He returned to even with a bogey on No. 18. During the second round. He had two birdies and two bogeys and was never above par.
Taylor Knoll and Owen Taylor tied for 52nd after each totaled 147 (3-over par). Knoll started his first round with bogeys on two of his first four holes before birdies on Nos. 15 and 17 brought him back to even. He gave a stroke back with a bogey on No. 18 and after five pars, bogeyed his final hole (No. 6).
Taylor was 1-under par through his first 13 holes of the first round with the help of birdies on Nos. 13, 18 and 1. However, he bogeyed holes 2-4 to finish even. His second round was much more steady with a birdie on the par-5 17th and two bogeys.
Freshman Landon Azevedo overcame an 80 in the first round with an even-par 72 on Saturday. Azevedo encountered immediate trouble on Friday with a bogey and two double bogeys on his first three holes. After moving to 8-over, he birdied No. 17 and No. 1 but then followed with bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3. His second round featured four birdies and three pars.
