DAVIS, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's and women's track and field teams made their outdoor debut this weekend at the Aggie Open on Friday and Saturday at UC Davis. The Hornet women combined to win five events while the men finished first in four events while battling strong winds and rain for most of the meet.
The women's lone individual win on the track came from Angelica Cusworth in the 400-hurdles. The newcomer ran 1:04.67 to win the race by nearly two seconds.
Fellow freshmen Nirie Boglino and Jelaia Jones also finished first in events. Boglino won the long jump with a best of 18-05.75. Jones had the top mark in the shot put at 42-01.50.
The final individual win for the women came in the javelin where Nikki Pappelis had a toss of 127-05.
Sacramento State also combined to win the women's 4x400 relay in a time of 3:57.52.
The Hornet men had Jelani Brice-Moore and Paul Lyons win in the running events. Brice-Moore finished first in the 200 after running 22.30. Lyons, who redshirted during the indoor season, returned to form to win the 110-hurdles in 14.21. That time placed him .46 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and was .80 seconds ahead of the closest collegiate runner.
Trevor Hubby finished first in the javelin with a long throw of 156-11 on his second attempt of the day.
Like the women, the Hornet men also finished first in the 4x400. The foursome ran 3:30.34.
Sacramento State will next host the Hornet Invitational & Multi on Friday and Saturday at Hornet Stadium.
