Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MORAGA, Calif. — Sacramento State combined for 12 runs and 20 hits in a pair of victories on the second and final day of the Saint Mary's Softball Tournament on Sunday at Cottrell Field. The Hornets began the day with a 4-2 win over Seattle before coming back two hours later to defeat Saint Mary's, 8-5.

With the victories, Sacramento State (6-7) finished the two-day tournament with a perfect 4-0 record that included two wins against both Seattle and host Saint Mary's. The Hornets have won four straight, and, after playing each of their first 13 games of the season away from home, the team will finally make its debut at Shea Stadium on Wednesday against UC Davis at 3 p.m.

The loss dropped Seattle to 4-10 while Saint Mary's fell to 4-13. In addition, the Hornets improved to 58-17 all-time against Saint Mary's and 3-0 vs. Seattle. In both wins today, the Hornets overcame early-game deficits to win.

Hornet right-hander Celina Matthias picked up the win against Seattle and the save against Saint Mary's today, and factored into the decision in all four Hornet wins during the tournament. Matthias has a good chance at earning Big Sky Pitcher of the Week honors after going 3-0 with a save during the tournament to go along with a 1.17 ERA and 18.0 innings pitched.

Sacramento State's Sasha Margulies finished the tournament with a .500 batting average (7-for-14) to go along with five runs scored, eight total bases and a .533 on-base percentage. Natalie Alas had six hits, Sydney Rasmussen scored four runs, Kayla Papez had four hits and a .538 slugging percentage, and Jessica Ravetti had four hits, two doubles and a team-best five RBIs. As a team, the Hornets hit .301 during the tournament while the pitching staff had a 2.00 ERA and the defense committed just two errors (.983 fielding percentage).

4-2 WIN OVER SEATTLE

After Seattle jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, Sacramento State scored three times in the second inning and added a run of insurance in the sixth to eventually defeat the Redhawks, 4-2. Matthias tossed her second complete game of the season, scattering eight hits while allowing just two runs over seven innings. The right-hander walked only one and faced six batters over the minimum to improve to 4-3.

The Hornets' three-run second inning featured just one hit as Sacramento State took advantage of two Saint Mary's errors. The second error of the inning allowed Rasmussen to score and tied the game at 1-1. Papez had an RBI-double to right field which scored Ravetti and a sacrifice fly from Alas scoring Solis gave the Hornets a 3-1 lead.

That was more than enough support for Matthias who allowed a Seattle run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Hornet lead to 3-2. However, Sacramento State added insurance in the bottom of the sixth when Papez connected on a one-out triple and scored on Hinton's single up the middle.

Seattle threatened in the bottom of the seventh with two singles to lead off the inning. Matthias was able to work out of the jam on a double play off the bat of Erika Rodgers followed by a groundout from pinch hitter Haley Beckstrom to end the game.

Hinton (2-for-4 with an RBI), Rasmussen (2-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and a run) and Papez (2-for-3 with a run and RBI) all had multiple-hit games for Sacrametno State. The Hornets' 5-9 hitters combined for all four Sacramento State runs.

Saint Mary's starter Alyssa Reuble (0-4) got the loss, allowing eight hits and four runs (two earned) over six innings.

8-5 WIN OVER SAINT MARY'S

Sacramento State trailed 3-1 after one inning, 4-3 after two innings, and 5-4 after four innings, but found a way to win its fourth consecutive game. The Hornets scored four runs (all with two outs) in the sixth inning to take a commanding 8-5 lead and Matthias pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning to earn her first career save. In fact, it was the Hornets' five save since the 2014 season.

In the top of the sixth inning, Sacramento State had runners at first and second with two outs when Margulies reached on an error from Saint Mary's second baseman Hailey Sparacino which scored Hinton to tie the game at 5-5. That opened the flood gates as Rasmussen, Ravetti and Solis all followed with RBI-hits. The Hornets' eight runs and 12 hits were both season highs and Sacramento State finished today's two-game sweep with a .346 (9-for-26) batting average with runners in scoring position.

All eight runs in the victory over Saint Mary's were scored after two outs. Sacramento State finished the game batting .500 (8-for-16) with two outs.

The Hornets scored once in the first inning, twice in the second and once in the third to tie the game at 4-4. The first-inning run came on a two-out, RBI-single from Margulies, Alas had a two-out, two-run single in the second, and Marissa Maligad's two-out, RBI-single in the third inning scored Margulies.

Corr (2-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing just one hit and one run over three innings while Matthias got the save. After Saint Mary's combined for four hits and four runs (two earned) during the first two innings off Hornet starter Taylor Tessier, the Gaels combined for just one hit over the final five innings against Corr and Matthias.

Four Hornets had multiple-hit games, comprised of Margulies (3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI), Ravetti (2-for-4 with a run and RBI), Solis (2-for-4 with an RBI) and Alas (2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs).

For Saint Mary's, Katie Moss (2-5) got the loss, allowing nine hits and six runs (two earned) over 5.2 innings.

Wednesday's game against UC Davis begins a season-long five-game homestead that includes the two-day, four-team Hornet Round Robin over the weekend. As past of the two-day tournament, Sacramento State will play both Nevada and Loyola Marymount on two occasions. For tournament schedule and ticket information, please click here.
