WOMEN WIN BIG SKY INDOOR TRACK & FIELD TITLE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

BOZEMAN, Mont. — The Sacramento State women scored 103.5 points to defend its title and win the sixth Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Championships in program history. The men's team finished in fourth place in a close finish.

The Hornet women had 13 individuals score during Saturday's events and also finished third in the 4x400 relay to easily win the its third championship in the last four years. The team earned big points in the pole vault where Danielle Brandon finished second, Hayley Ann Carbullido was fourth and Miranda Dumas tied for seventh. Brandon set her career best after clearing 13-01.50 which moved her into second place in school history. Carbullido also recorded a career best with a successful attempt at 12-06.25 which tied for the sixth best all-time by a Hornet. Dumas finished with a best of 12-02.50.

The team also had three scorers in the finals of the 60-hurdles. Stephanie Blumm was fourth after running 8.71. Freshmen Emilia Del Hoyo and Olivia Leavitt were fifth and sixth, respectively with times of 8.76 and 8.79. In the 800, Hannah Edwards ran 2:14.18 to place fourth and was followed by Amanda Garcia who was sixth after running 2:16.90. Garcia also placed sixth in the mile with a time of 5:04.73. She was joined by senior Chloe Berlioux who finished in fourth place at 5:01.90.

In the sprints, freshman Amari Jones was seventh in the 60-meter dash and senior Joy Weems placed third in the 400 with a career best time of 56.60 which moved her into eighth place in Hornet history. Freshman Nirie Boglino completed the scorers on Saturday for the women by placing sixth in the triple jump with a best of 37-10.75.

"It was a good performance by the women," Sacramento State head coach Jeff Magley said. "We have a young team and they were able to step up in the pressure but we also had some really nice efforts by our seniors." 

The men recorded a pair of top 10 marks in the field events. Mohamed Abdullah placed second overall and now ranks fourth in school history with a triple jump of 48-10.00. Gathunga Ndirangu was third in the triple jump after a long of 48-07.50. Senior Richard Casas set his PR in the shot put with a distance of 54-01.25. That mark moved him into fourth place at Sacramento State and left him in fifth place in the meet.

The Hornets had three scorers in the men's 60-meter dash. Michael Turner was third after a time of 6.92 seconds. Bryan Cuellar placed sixth and Eric Adorno was eighth in 6.96 and 7.00, respectively. Aric Walden finished in fourth place in the 60-hurdles after running 8.18.

The women won the team title by 16.5 points. Weber State was second with 87 while Eastern Washington (79.5) and North Dakota (78) had a tight battle for third place. Portland State completed the top five with 62 points.

Northern Arizona captured the team title in the men's competition with 151 points. Southern Utah (72), Idaho State (69) and Sacramento State (67) were separated by five points for second, third and fourth place.
