BOZEMAN, Mont. — Kassandra Corrigan set the school record and finished third in the pentathlon during the first day of the Big Sky Indoor Championships on Thursday.
Corrigan scored 3,794 points which broke her own school record of 3,751 which was set last season. Her total trailed only Erika McLeod of Montana (3,882) and Danielle Rider of Montana State (3,844). Freshman Emilia Del Hoyo also scored for Sacramento State after placing eighth with 3,510 points. Elizabeth Venzon finished finished ninth with 3,445.
Corrigan began the day with a career-best time of 8.97 seconds in the 60-hurdles. She then cleared 5-03.25 in the high jump before a shot put of 36-05.5 That distance also set her career long and shattered her previous best by over four feet. Corrigan closed the meet with a long jump of 18-00.25 and ran the 800 in 2:19.34.
Del Hoyo posted a time of 8.99 in the 60-hurdles before clearing 5-03.25 in the high jump to match her career high. Her shot put of 36-02.25 was a career best as was her long jump of 18-03.75. Del Hoyo's hopes for a personal best came to an end after running 2:43.73 in the 800.
Venzon ran 9.30 in the 60-hurdles before a high jump of 5-05.75. She had a shot put of 33-07.25, long jumped 17-04.00 and ran the 800 in 2:37.89.
The duo of Alec Acevedo and Max Jette have the Hornets in good position after the first four events of the heptathlon. Acevedo is tied for second place with 2,758 points while Jette is fifth with 2,700 points. The pair are both chasing Idaho's Drew Thompson who tallied 2,842 during the first day.
Acevedo ran 7.11 in the 60-meter dash for the fastest time of the day. However, the junior suffered a slight hamstring pull in the event which limited him to only one long jump attempt where he recorded a mark of 20-05.00. Despite the setback, he finished the day with a shot put of 38-01.25 and clearing 6-02.00 in the high jump.
Jette ran 7.50 in the 60 before long jumping 21-04.25. He set his career best with a shot put of 38-06.25 before a successful high jump at 6-02.00.
The final day of the heptathlon will see the competitors take part in the 60-hurdles, pole vault and 1000-meter run.
