PACIFIC USES HUGE LATE RUN TO DEFEAT MEN'S BASKETBALL, 74-58

STOCKTON, Calif. -- After the Hornets had taken a 45-41 lead midway through the second half, Pacific closed the final 11:21 on a 33-13 run to defeat Sacramento State, 74-58, on Thursday evening at the Spanos Center.

Sacramento State did not trail in the half and went into intermission with a 32-31 lead. However, Pacific, which improved to 3-0 at home this season, outscored Sacramento State in the second half by a 43-26 margin. Both teams battled back and forth during the first eight minutes of the second half as a Marcus Graves runner gave the Hornets a 45-41 lead with 11:41 remaining.

However, it was all Pacific from there, as the Tigers scored 33 of the game's final 46 points. During that 33-13 run, Sacramento State went over six minutes without a made field goal and finished the last 11 minutes of the half just 2-for-10 from the field with six turnovers. Sparking the run was Pacific guard T.J. Wallace who scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the second half.

The loss dropped Sacramento State to 1-6 on the young season, the program's worst start since the 2008-09 squad had the same record after seven games. The Hornets are also 0-6 away from home (0-3 on the road, 0-3 on neutral floors), and wrapped up a season-long stretch of four straight games away from the Nest.

Pacific improved to 3-3 overall with the victory. The Tigers and Hornets were playing for the 40th in a series which dates back to 1948, and Pacific now owns a 32-8 record in the all-time series. That includes 18 straight wins against the Hornets in Stockton, a streak which dates back to the early 1950s.

The free throw line loomed large in tonight's outcome as Pacific was 22-for-30 (.733) from the charity stripe while the Hornets shot just 13-for-25 (.520). Nineteen of Pacific's 22 makes from the stripe came in the second half while Sacramento State was just 9-of-20 from the line after intermission.

In addition, Pacific had healthy advantages over Sacramento State in points off turnovers (19-8), second chance points (12-5) and bench points (19-7). The Tigers converted on just two more field goals than Sacramento State, but Pacific also had three more made 3-pointers and nine more made free throws. The Hornets finished the game shooting .412 (21-51) from the field and .300 (3-10) from the 3-point line while Pacific shot .397 (23-58) from the floor and .400 (6-15) from beyond the arc.

The Tigers also held a 44-34 edge in the rebounding department and limited Sacramento State to just four offensive rebounds.

Three Sacramento State players scored in double figures, comprised of Justin Strings (18 points, seven rebounds), Eric Stuteville (15 points, four rebounds, three blocks) and Nick Hornsby (10 points, seven rebounds). Stuteville shot 7-for-10 from the field, and 11 of his points came in the first half. Graves added eight points, four rebounds and three assists while Grant Dressler had five points and four rebounds. That fivesome combined for 56 of the Hornets' 58 points in the contest.

For Pacific, Wallace finished with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals and he went 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Ray Bowles (17 points) and David Taylor (13 points) also scored in double figures while Tonko Vuko had 11 rebounds and Jack Williams finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Sacramento State will finally return home to face UC Merced this Saturday at 5:05 p.m. It marks just the Hornets' second home game of the season and first since Nov. 17. Saturday's game is part of a doubleheader that will see the Sacramento State women host USC at 7:35 p.m. Fans can watch both games for the price of one ticket.
