Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Lauren Kissell (14), Madeline Cannon (13) and Sloan Lovett (11) each posted double figures in kills to lead Sacramento State to a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-18) over Campbell in the third and final round of the Holly Springs Volleyball Invitational Saturday evening at Gore Arena.
With the victory, Sacramento State was crowed tournament champions by virtue of its perfect 3-0 record. The Hornets also beat Norfolk State (3-0) and UNC Wilmington (3-1) during the two-day event. The victory over UNCW was a 7:00 a.m. PDT start time this morning.
The Hornets have now won five straight matches, and improved their record to 6-1 this season. The five-match winning streak is the second longest in the last eight years (the 2011 team won six straight), and the team's 6-1 record ties for the second best mark in the last 20 years (6-1 in 2002; 7-0 in 1995).
In addition, Sacramento State, which has yet to play a five-set match this year, has now won three matches this year after dropping the first set. Campbell dropped to 3-4 with the loss.
Kissell was named the tournament MVP after averaging 3.40 kills and 0.80 blocks per set over three matches, while both Lovett (2.91 kps, seven aces) and Courtney Dietrich (1.50 kps, 0.70 bps, .406 hitting percentage) were also named to the all-tournament team. The Hornets averaged 12.73 kills, 19.36 digs and 2.45 blocks per set while limiting the opposition to a .103 hitting percentage during the tournament.
For the third time in the last four matches, Sacramento State dropped the first set this evening, but rallied to win each of the next three sets. In fact, Campbell combined for just two leads during the final three sets. The Camels were limited to hitting percentages of .036, .070 and .083, respectively, over the final three frames.
"I was pleased with the way we competed all weekend, especially against some teams that played very well against us," Sacramento State head coach Ruben Volta said. "We started from behind in a couple matches, and we were able to turn it around.
"Tonight, Campbell played outstanding defensively, especially in the first set. We were crushing some balls, and they kept making incredible saves and digs. That kind of set the tone for the rest of the match as both teams played very well on defense and we had some long rallies. I was very proud of the way our team responded after dropping the first set."
Sacramento State had 94 digs in the match, a monster total for a four-set match. Four different Hornets had more than 10 digs, including Lexie Skalbeck (match-high 29), Shannon Boyle (18), Morgan Stanley (11) and setter Kennedy Kurtz (11). The Hornets combined for 178 digs in two matches today.
Kissell had 14 kills and five blocks, Madeline Cannon had 13 kills, four blocks and a .500 hitting percentage, Lovett had 11 kills and six digs, and Boyle had eight kills to go along with her 18 digs. Kurtz finished with a pair of kills, 43 assists and 11 digs, Dietrich had six kills, three blocks and a .294 hitting percentage, and Julia Wright chipped in eight digs.
The Hornets had large statistical advantages over Campbell in kills (54-39), hitting percentage (.220-.088), aces (7-2) and team blocks (10-4). Stanley, Lovett and Cannon each had two aces.
Rachel Harty was the only Campbell player with double figures in kills as she finished with 10. Mary Crema had 26 digs and Rebecca Ramirez finished with 19 assists and 15 digs.
Sacramento State will look to continue the winning streak next week when the team competes in a two-day, four-match tournament hosted by Fresno State. On Friday, the Hornets will take on Central Michigan and UC Riverside, followed by Saturday against Fresno State and Cal State Fullerton.
