HAYFIELD TIED FOR LEAD, MEN'S GOLF IN SECOND AT BIG SKY

ANGELS CAMP, Calif. — Sacramento State senior Riley Hayfield shot an even-par 72 and is tied for the individual lead following the first round of the Big Sky Men's Golf Championship on Monday at Greenhorn Creek Resort.

The Hornets are two strokes behind Idaho for the lead. Sacramento State finished the first day with a total of 297. Weber State (302), Southern Utah (305) and Hartford (306) complete the top five.

Playing in the first foursome of the day, Hayfield opened by birdeying thee of the first six holes. He alternated pars with birdies on the par-4 second, par-5 fourth and par-3 sixth. He made the turn at 2-under after two more pars and a bogey on the par-3 eighth. Hayfield began the began nine with a birdie on the par-5 10th and added a birdie on the par-3 13th to move to 4-under. However, he had a pair of double bogeys and three pars to end his round. His total places him in a tie with Idaho's Aaron Cockerill for the individual lead.

Sophomore Aaron Beverly is tied for seventh place following a round of 74. Beverly also birdied the second hole but moved to 1-over with bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6. A birdie on No. 8 returned him to even at the turn. Beverly's back nine had four birdies, a par, two bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. He birdied the par-5 10th and 18th as well as the par-4 12th and 16th.

Luke Kristo shot 75 and is tied for ninth place. Kristo was even at the midway point of his round with birdies on the par-4 fifth and par-5 ninth along with a double bogey on the par-3 eighth. He moved to 1-under with a birdie on No. 10 and remained there until bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14. Following a pair of pars, Kristo had a double bogey on No. 17 and a par on No. 18.

Sophomore Taylor Knoll is tied for 12th place with a 76. Knoll parred his first four holes before a triple bogey on the par-4 seventh set him back. He got back on track with a birdie on the par-5 ninth to make the turn at 2-over. On the back nine, he had a bogey on No. 12, a double bogey on No. 13 and a birdie on the par-5 18th.

Freshman Zach Liberatore completed the lineup with a round of 79 and is tied for 23rd place. Liberatore had a birdie on the par-5 ninth, 12 pars, two bogeys and three double bogeys.

The tournament continues with the second on Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday. Sacramento State will be paired with Idaho, Weber State and Southern Utah beginning at 8 a.m.
