WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO FRESNO STATE

FRESNO, Calif. -- Sacramento State freshman Ana Loaiza Esquivias won her No. 4 singles match, but it was not enough as Fresno State took the other five singles and one doubles points to take the match, 6-1, on Sunday at the Fig Garden Swim and Tennis Club.

At No. 4, Loaiza Esquivias was down a set before coming back in the second and the tiebreaker to beat the Bulldogs' Anneka Watts. Loaiza Esquivias has had an excellent singles campaign as she has now won four of her last five singles matches and seven overall which leads the team.

Hornet sophomore Deimante Bulatovaite found herself in a tightly contested match at No. 2 singles against Fresno State's Maiar Sherif Ahmed. Bulatovaite dropped the first set, 6-2, before taking the second, but ultimately losing in the tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 10-6.

Bulatovaite has played the most three-set matches this season for the Hornets with five.

Playing in her first match of the season, Hornet sophomore Andie Mouzes took on the Bulldogs' Tanya Murtagh at No. 6 singles. Murtagh cruised through the match against Mouzes, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.

Sacramento State sophomore Alina Soltanici took on No. 31 Sophie Watts at No. 1 singles. Soltanici has played five ranked opponents this year and has one win dating back to Feb. 21 against Washington's then No. 80 Elianne Douglas-Miron. Soltanici was defeated by S. Watts in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles play, the duo of junior Olivia Boija and redshirt freshman Tori Trylovich were downed by the Watts' sisters at No. 2 by a score of 8-3. The pair of junior Daria Savchenko and Loaiza Esquivias were also defeated, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles to give the opening point to Fresno State.

This wraps up Sacramento State's four-match stretch of playing non-conference ranked opponents. Fresno State improves to 10-3 on the season while the Hornets are now 6-7.

The Hornets will return to Big Sky Conference action on Wednesday, March 11, as they face off with Southern Utah at 3 p.m. at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
