BEVERLY STAYS HOT AT DEL WALKER INTERCOLLEGIATE

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Aaron Beverly finished the first two rounds of the Del Walker Intercollegiate even and is tied for fifth place to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team on Monday. The Hornets are tied for sixth place heading into the final round and are 12 strokes behind UC Irvine for the lead.

Beverly opened with a 1-under par of 69 and added a 1-over 71 to finish the day at 140. His total places him eight strokes off the pace of UCI's Pete Fernandez who shot 63-69-132 to open a six stroke lead.

Beverly was even or 1-under throughout his first two rounds. He began the day on the 13th hole and moved to 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 17th. A bogey on par-4 fourth moved him back to even before he birdied the par-4 sixth. A bogey on No. 17 was trailed by three pars and a birdie on the par-5 12th.

In the second round, Beverly opened with a par and a birdie on the par-4 14th. After a pair of bogeys and birdies and seven pars, he was still 1-under through 13 holes. He bogeyed the par-4 eighth and ninth before ending his day with three consecutive pars.

Taylor Knoll ranks second on the team and is tied for 12th after shooting 72-70-142 (2-over). He birdied No. 18 to move to 1-under through his first five holes but found himself at 2-over following a bogey on the par-3 third and a double-bogey on the par-4 fifth. He earned a stroke back with a birdie on the par-4 sixth but immediately bogeyed the par-3 seventh. In the second round, Knoll had five birdies and five bogeys. He was 2-over through his first eight holes but birdied three of five holes (Nos. 4, 6, 8) to move to 1-under. After two pars, he sandwiched bogeys on Nos. 11 and 13 around a birdie on the par-5 12th to end his round.

Senior Luke Kristo is tied for 32nd overall with rounds of 75-71-146. Kristo's opening round featured a birdie, four bogeys and a double bogey. His second round had three birdies and four bogeys.

Riley Hayfield matched Kristo's two-round total after shooting 74-72-146. Hayfleid's first round had three birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. He came back in the afternoon with three birdies and five bogeys.

He had the largest improvement on the team between rounds, lowering his total by five strokes. In that round, he had three birdies and four bogeys and also had a stretch of seven consecutive pars.

The third round of the tournament will take place on Tuesday. Sacramento State will be paired with Wichita State and Eastern Michigan.
