Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- It was a back and forth affair as Sacramento State and No. 46 Long Beach State alternated points until redshirt freshman Anna-Maria Nau won at No. 2 singles in the final match of the day, which clinched the victory for the Hornets on Friday at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
Facing Long Beach State's Ebba Uden, Nau took the first set, dropped the second and won the decisive final set to beat Uden 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and handing the 49ers (6-1) their first loss of the season. Sacramento State improved its record to 5-5.
The Hornets were able to sweep doubles play as the duos of juniors Jennifer Ong and Olivia Boija, and junior Daria Savchenko and freshman Ana Loaiza Esquivias took their matches at No.1 and 3, 7-4 each to capture the doubles point and the early lead.
Long Beach State took the opening singles point at No. 5 before Loaiza Esquivias helped the Hornets regain the lead, with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
Big Sky Player of the Week, Hornet sophomore Alina Soltanici, fell in her match to No. 93 Maeva Razakasoa at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1. It was the second straight week in which Soltanici faced off against a ranked opponent.
Sacramento State's Boija put the Hornets back on top with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over the 49ers Julie Gerard at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Deimante Bulatovaite pushed Long Beach State's Hayley Thompson to three sets, but ultimately fell 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Nau went on to clinch the victory for the Hornets who have won four of the their last five matches.
Sacramento State will hit the road to take on Saint Mary's on Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
