LAKESIDE, Calif. — Luke Kristo, Aaron Beverly and Taylor Knoll each shot in the 60s to lead Sacramento State to a third-place finish at the Barona Collegiate Cup on Tuesday.
The Hornets shot 278 during the final round to rank second among the 13 teams in the field. The score was the fifth lowest in school history. For the three-round tournament, Sacramento State totaled 853 which ranks fourth in the Hornet record book.
Host San Diego State pulled away from the field to win the tournament by 12 strokes. The Aztecs shot 286-284-273-833 and were followed in the top five by San Diego (845), Sacramento State (853), UC Irvine (857) and UC Riverside (857).
The Hornets were led by Beverly who tied for 11th at 66-76-69-211. The sophomore's total was the best of his career and tied for the 11th best in school history. Beverly began his third round on the 10th hole with four consecutive pars. He then birdies Nos. 14-16 and made the turn at 2-under following a bogey on the par-4 18th. The Fairfield, Calif., native started the front nine with an eagle on the par-5 first (his second eagle of the tournament). Six straight pars came before a bogey on the par-4 eighth and a par on No. 9.
Kristo led the team in the third round with a 68. His three-round total of 72-74-68-214 tied him for 17th place. The senior was 2-under through nine holes with birdies on the par-4 12th and par-5 17th. On the front side of the course, he had three birdies (Nos. 1, 5 and 8) as well as a bogey on the par-5 sixth.
Knoll also tied for 17th place with rounds of 67-79-69-214. On Tuesday, Knoll opened with a par on No. 12 and a birdie on the par-5 13th. He continued to dominate on the par-5 throughout the round with birdies on Nos. 17, 1 and 6. Following a birdie on the par-3 seventh, he dropped to 5-under but gave back two strokes with bogeys on par-4 eighth and ninth.
Riley Hayfield tied for 34th place after shooting 69-76-74-219. Hayfield's third round was comprised of five birdies, four bogeys and a triple bogey.
Robert Parden completed the lineup with a 54-hole total of 76-75-72-223 which tied him for 53rd place. Parden started on the 11th hole on Tuesday and was even through nine holes with two birdies and a pair of bogeys. A double bogey on No. 3 took him to 2-over before he returned to even with birdies on the par-5 sixth and the par-4 eighth.
San Diego State's Xander Schauffele was the medalist after shooting 71-64-64-199.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Folino Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 16-17.
