TRACK & FIELD CLAIMS TWO EVENT WINS IN FIRST DAY AT MINNESOTA

MINNEAPOLIS — Caprice Powell finished first in the women's 200 and Richard Cooper won the men's long jump to lead Sacramento State during the first day of the Jack Johnson Classic on Friday.

Along with the two event wins, the Hornets had two pentathletes each record top five scores in school history. Kassandra Corrigan placed third overall and moved into third place in the Hornet record book with a five-event total of 3,670 points. Elizabeth Venzon jumped to fifth place in school history with 3,522 points in her first pentathlon for the Hornets. The pair ranked among the top 10 among the 26-athlete field in all five events. Venzon also tied the third-best indoor high jump by a Sacramento State woman after clearing 5-06.00. Corrigan made her move in the final event, the 800, with a time of 2:20.47 which was the second fastest of the day.

Powell ran 24.72 to win the 200. The senior ran in the opening heat of the event and saw her time hold as she bettered the field by .75 seconds. Senior Dominique Whittington was fifth in the event with a time of 25.10. Sophomore Emily Johnston ran the third-fastest 5K time by a Hornet with a time of 17:55.33.

Cooper led three Hornets which placed among the top seven in the long jump invitational. The redshirt freshman jumped 23-02.50 for his personal best both indoors and outdoors. Michael Turner finished fifth at 22-09.00 while Julian Young was seventh (22-04.25).

Alec Acevedo and Max Jette each competed in the first four events of the pentathlon. Acevedo is currently seventh with 2,109 points and Jette is 17th with 1,874. Acevedo had the fifth best long jump in the field at 21-11.75 and was sixth in the 60 with a time of 7.17.

The meet will continue on Saturday with the conclusion of the heptathlon and the rest of the main program.
