FRESNO, Calif. — Sophomore Robert Parden recorded rounds of 71 and 72 and is tied for 11th place following the first day of the Nick Watney Invitational on Monday at Sunnyside Country Club.
Riley Hayfield and Parden helped the Hornets get off to a great start as the Hornets were even through the morning round. Hayfield shot a 2-under par 70 and Parden was 1-under to spark the team. The team also counted a 1-over par 73 from Luke Kristo and a 74 from Aaron Beverly.
During that first round, Hayfield began with three consecutive bogeys on holes Nos. 9-11. He parred his next two before beginning a streak of four birdies over his next six holes with a birdie on the par-4 14th hole. Hayfield added birdies on the par-4 16th, par-3 17th and par-4 first. The senior then bogeyed Nos. 2 and 3 before closing with birdies on Nos. 5, 6 and 8.
Parden started with five pars and stood at 1-under through his first seven holes with a birdie on the par-4 10th. He remained even until birdies on No. 15 and 17 dropped him to 2-under. Four pars kept him there but he ended with a bogey on the par-3 fourth. Parden led the Hornets in the second round with four birdies and four bogeys. He was 2-over after his 13th hole but closed with birdies on No. 18 and the par-3 fourth hole.
Luke Kristo is tied for 38th place with rounds of 73-75-148. Kristo's first round had five birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey. He opened strong and was 2-under after 10 holes. However, he played Nos. 16-1 at 4-over par. In the second round, he had two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.
Sophomore Taylor Knoll is tied with Kristo with the reverse scores (75-73). Knoll had three birdies and six bogeys in the morning round. His second round consisted of four birdies, three pars and a double bogey. Knoll finished that round with consecutive birdies on the par-5 fifth and par-3 sixth.
Aaron Beverly is one stroke behind the pair and enters the final round tied for 43rd place. Bevely had five birdies in the first round to accompany five bogeys and a double bogey. His second round was left eventful with 15 pars and three bogeys.
Pacific shot 18-under (270) as a team during the second round and has opened up a 17 stroke lead over host Fresno State. The Tigers shot 281-270-551 on the day compared to the Bulldogs' 281-287-568. Sacramento State is in ninth place at 288-295-583.
The third round will begin with a shotgun start on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
