Box Score FRESNO, Calif. – After a scoreless first half Sacramento State got goals from seniors Shelby Salvacion and Kristen Bridges in the second half to pick up a 2-0 win on Friday at Fresno Pacific. The game was the second consecutive 2-0 win for the Hornets, who defeated Canisius by the same score last Sunday.
With its first road win of the season Sacramento State moved its record to 4-3-0 and has now allowed only four goals through seven games with three shutouts. Fresno Pacific, a Div. II school, dropped to 0-3-0.
Sacramento State held a 20-14 shot advantage for the game and had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Hornets had eight corner kicks while allowing only one. Senior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata made four saves for the shutout while dropping her Big Sky-best goals against average to 0.55.
In the first half Sacramento State had an 8-5 shot advantage but failed to place a shot on goal. Fresno Pacific tallied two shots on goal over the last eight minutes of the opening period but Mata made two saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Hornets kicked their offensive attack into high gear early in the second half with a corner kick and a first shot on goal in the first three minutes. In the 50th minute, sophomore Maggie Pleis sent an outlet pass to Salvacion and the senior fired a shot past Fresno Pacific goalkeeper Vanessa Escobar to put Sacramento State ahead.
Sacramento State continued on the attack and nearly had another goal in the 55th minute when Bridges hit the post. Bridges would find the back of the net in the 64th minute as she controlled a loose ball and was able to finish on a deep shot from 30 yards out.
The Hornets did not have another shot on goal through the remainder of the game and the Sunbirds created some offensive pressure late but Mata tallied one last save in the 89th minute to complete the shutout.
Bridges led the Hornets with five shots while Salvacion and Pleis each took four as Sacramento State had a season-high 20 shots. Six of the team's seven games this season have been shutouts.
After it's only game of the week Sacramento State returns home to host UC Santa Barbara next Friday at 4 p.m.
