WOMEN’S SOCCER HOLDS OFF CSUN ON REYES’ WINNER

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Junior Tea Reyes scored her second goal of the year in the 29th minute and the Sacramento State defense made it stand up as the Hornets outlasted a 25-shot barrage from host CSUN for a 1-0 victory on Thursday night at Matador Soccer Field in Northridge, Calif.

Sacramento State won its second consecutive match and evened its overall record a 4-4 with the triumph, winning for only the fourth time in 12 all-time meetings with its future Big West Conference rival and posting back-to-back wins in the series after the Matadors had been unbeaten in seven straight.

CSUN, which lost to the Hornets on its home field for the first time in the history of the series, fell to 2-6-1 overall on the year and remained winless at home (0-4) in 2025.

The host Matadors held a 12-4 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, holding Sacramento State to just two shots on the goal in the period. Unfortunately for CSUN, one of those two would prove to be decisive 29 minutes in.

Reyes escaped two defenders out of the corner on the right side and found some room at the top of the 18. Her left-footed shot sailed to the upper right corner at the back left post, curving past Matador keeper Riley Liebsack and in for the 1-0 lead.

CSUN finished with the final three shots of the half with junior goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier making the last of her four first-half stops to keep her team ahead at the break.

Two more attempts by the Matadors sailed high to start the second before the Hornets' offense found another gear, taking the next four shots as they pushed for a second score. Palmatier then came up big in the final 11 minutes, making three more saves to keep CSUN off the board, and then surviving a last-ditch corner attempt as time expired to clinch the victory.

Palmatier finished with seven saves on the night in recording her 14th career clean sheet, now needing just three more saves to move past Aailyah Fesilil (2017-21) for fourth on the career list while the shutout total gives her sole possession of third on the program's all-time chart.

Reyes finished with three of the team's 11 attempts on the night, while Lexi Schroeder, Aryana Martinez, and Tierra Pickell all had two apiece.

Sacramento State closes out its road trip on Sunday (Sept. 14) at 11 a.m., traveling to UC Santa Barbara.
