SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After the two schools played to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes, visiting UC Davis tacked on two goals in the second half to lift the Aggies to a 2-0 win over Sacramento State on Thursday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.
The match marked the end of non-conference play for the Hornets, who fell to 4-6 overall. UC Davis improved to 2-4-3 overall, snapping a six-match winless skid in the process.
Sacramento State faced a volley of nine shots in the opening 45 minutes as goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier came up with four saves to keep the visiting side off the board.
It only took five minutes in the second half for the Aggies to take the lead out of the locker room, breaking the scoreless deadlock with a curving shot from distance that clipped the crossbar and settled into the upper left-hand corner for the 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later the Hornets thought they had the equalizer as Lexi Schroeder fed a ball through traffic to Tea Reyes in the box, who put home a shot to the right side. However, the offside flag went up, wiping the score off the board and preserving the UC Davis lead.
The two teams went back and forth until the Aggies were able to ice the match with a second goal in the 82nd minute for the final 2-0 score.
Palmatier's four first-half saves gave her 219 for her career, moving her into fourth place on the school's all-time list. She needs 32 more to match Amy Seely (2000-02) for third.
Sacramento State now has a week off to prepare for the start of Big Sky Conference play which begins on the road next Thursday (Sept. 25) at Northern Colorado. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT in Greeley, Colo.
