BERKELEY, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's and women's track & field teams began its weekend at the Brutus Hamilton Open on Friday. The meet is a precursor for Saturday's Brutus Hamilton Challenge.

The Hornets had several top five finishes at Friday's meet including individual victories from Miranda Dumas and Steven Pust in the pole vault and Gathunga Ndirangu in the men's triple jump.

For the women, Dumas tied for the top mark in the pole vault after clearing 11-11.75. Molly Pearlman tied for fourth in the event with a successful vault at 11-05.75.

Brianna Cole placed second in 400 with a season best of 56.68. She was directly followed by freshman Joy Weems who ran 57.25. Cole also placed second in the triple jump with a best of 37-0675. Freshman Kristen Robinson was third in the long jump (17-08.00).

In the throws, freshmen Kathleen Durand and Mikayla Friend and sophomore Elaine Weaver placed third through fifth, respectively, in the discus. Durand led the trio with a best of 131-00. Tyhana Cooper led the team in the shot put by placing fifth at 40-08.25.

Kassandra Corrigan provided the final top five finish by tying for second in the high jump at 5-03.00.

Pust cleared 15-05.00 to capture the top spot in the men's pole vault. Teammate Brett Thompson was second at 14-11.00. Ndirangu won the triple jump with a best of 45-01.75.

Three Hornets placed in the top five in the throws. Matthew Sepulveda was third in the discus (153-10), Richard Casas was fourth in the shot put (51-03.75) and James January was fifth in the same event with a best of 48-09.50.

Along with Ndirangu's win in the triple jump, fellow freshman Richard Cooper was second in the long jump (21-00.50).

On the track, sophomore Casey Wheeler had the highest finish as he placed second in the 110-hurdles in 14.98. Michael Turner was third and Osaretin Ogbeide was fifth in the 100. Turner ran 11.04 while Ogbeide came across in 11.13. Freshman Richard Cooper also set a PR in 11.17.

Miguel Aguiar (49.76) and Adam Huhyn (50.62) were fourth and fit in the 400. Cole Younger ran 1:54.60 to place fourth in the 800.
