STOCKTON, Calif. — Cody Bates and Robert Parden each shot 70 to help the Sacramento State men's golf team finish in fifth pace at the Stockton Invitational on Saturday. During the final round, the Hornets shot 2-over par as a team (286).
Washington State won the team title by six strokes after totaling 841. The Cougars were followed by Denver (847), Pacific (852), BYU (856) and Sacramento State (857) in the top five.
The Hornets have five golfers finish within two strokes of one another. Taylor Knoll tied for 19th with a 54-hole total of 215 to lead the way. Luke Kristo, Parden and Zach Liberatore were each one stroke back. The trio were followed by Bates who totaled 217. Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara was the medalist after recording rounds of 70-68-67-205 to win by one stroke.
On Saturday, Bates opened the 10th hole and was 1-under at the midway point of his round with a birdie on the par-5 14th. On the front side of the course, he double bogeyed the par-4 fourth hole but later returned to even with a birdie on the par-4 seventh. He ended his day with a birdie on the par-4 ninth.
Parden was 3-under through his first 11 holes with birdies on Nos. 12, 17 and 2. Back-to-back bogeys on the par-3 third and par-4 fifth came before five pars. He finished the tournament at 70-76-70-216.
Knoll shot 72 during the final round with four birdies and five bogeys. Over his first nine holes, he was 2-over after birdying the par-4 12th and par-5 16th. He also had four bogeys during that stretch. On the front nine, he had birdied the second, bogeyed the fifth and ended with a birdie on No. 9. Knoll shot 70-72-72-215 for the tournament.
Kristo provided the final score towards the team total on Saturday. The senior double bogeyed the par-3 11th but played his next 12 holes at even par before a bogey on the par-4 sixth. He finished the event at 73-69-74-216.
Riley Hayfield shot 79 during the third round. The senior had a biride, four bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey during the day.
Freshman Zach Liberatore shot 72 as an individual. Liberatore was 2-under through his first 11 holes with the help of birdies on Nos. 14, 16 and 2. However, he bogeyed three of his final seven holes.
The event was the final during the fall for Sacramento State.
