MEN'S GOLF OFF TO STRONG START AT PACIFIC INVITATIONAL

STOCKTON, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team finished the first round of the Pacific Invitational at 1-over par and is tied for fifth place on Thursday at the Stockton Country Club. The Hornets shot 285 and were aided by three golfers who recorded a round of even or better.

Sophomore Robert Parden was 1-under par with a round of 71 and is tied for ninth place. Parden parred his first four holes before birdying the par-5 14th. Another par was followed by a second birdie on the par-5 16. He made the turn at 1-under following a bogey on the par-4 18th. On the front nine, he opened with a bogey on the par-4 first but played the next five holes at 1-under with four pars and a birdie on the par-4 fourth. A bogey on No. 7 moved him to even before he ended his day with a birdie on the par-4 ninth.

Taylor Knoll and Riley Hayfield were each even and are tied for 17th place. Knoll was 1-under through his first nine holes with a birdie on No. 16. His first bogey came on the par-4 fourth and a second followed on the par-3 eighth to move him to 1-over. Knoll returned to even with a birdie on No. 9.

Hayfield began with consecutive bogeys but was able to work his way back to even with an eagle on the par-5 14th. Four pars kept him even at the turn before he birdied the par-4 first to drop to 1-under. After five pars, the senior bogeyed the par-4 seventh and ended his day with two additional pars.

Luke Kristo is tied for 32nd place with a round of 73. Kristo was even through his first seven holes with birdies on Nos. 13 and 16 and a double bogey on the par-3 15th. A bogey on No. 17 moved him to 1-over at the midway point of his round. On the front, he parred five of the first six holes but had a double bogey on No. 4 in that run. A birdie on No. 7 and two pars completed his round.

Zach Libedratore, who was competing as an individual, also shot 73. The freshman had four birdies, three bogeys and a triple bogey during his round. Cody Bates recorded a round of 76 and is tied for 52nd.

Washington State shot 275 and is 9-under to lead the team standings. Host Pacific and Grand Canyon each shot 281 and are tied for second.

Charlie Mroz of Washington State is the low individual with a round of 66 (5-under). Mroz had an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys.

The three-round tournament will continue with the second round on Friday. The first groups tee off at 8:30 a.m.
