WOMEN WIN SIXTH STRAIGHT BIG SKY OUTDOOR TITLE; MEN FINISH SECOND

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — The Sacramento State women's track and field team continued its unprecedented run of success, capturing its sixth consecutive Big Sky Conference outdoor title on Saturday. The Hornet men finished second to Northern Arizona.

The women's team scored 155.5 points and finished 45.5 points ahead of host Portland State. The team featured six individual event winners during the final two days and also set a school record in the 4x400 on Saturday. Sacramento State also won the Big Sky Indoor Championships earlier this season.

"It wasn't a perfect meet for the women but everyone was competing to the best of their abilities," Sacramento State head coach Kathleen Raske said. "It was an overall effort and this team knows how to bring it during the final day. They don't like to lose."

For the men, the Hornets finished just seven points shy of NAU (143-136). Highlighting the men's performance was sophomore Paul Lyons who won the 110- and 400-hurdles and senior Jesse Elvrom who set the Big Sky Championship and Sacramento State record in the javelin. Lyons shared the Men's Most Valuable Athlete Award with Northern Arizona's Diego Estrada. Elvrom earned the Male Most Outstanding Performance Award.

"It was disappointing not to win. We had plenty of opportunities today but couldn't capitalize," Raske said. "Individually, we had some outstanding performances."

The women scored in all but two events and had all-conference honorees (top three finishers) in eight events. The individual champions began on Friday night when Lauren Mugnaini won the 10K in 35:25.31. On Saturday, Morgan Pope (200), Dominique Whittington (400), Morgan Dampier (800) and Sakya Bolton (100H) each won on the track. Alanna Coker was victorious in the triple jump for the lone field event win.

Whittington's time of 53.50 broke Bobbie Gilmore's school record of 53.83 which was set in 1982. That record was the longest standing women's mark in school history. Dampier ran 2:09.94 for her PR and moved into sixth in the Hornet record book.

Bolton concluded her Big Sky career by winning the 100-hurdles in  13.60 seconds. Between the long jump and hurdles, Bolton won a Big Sky individual championship during each year of her career and was a seven-time event champion.

Coker also PRed during her process of winning the triple jump. Her leap of 40-09.75 moved her into a tie for eighth place along with Lori Vaught.

The 4x400 relay team wrapped up the meet with a school record of 3:42.19 which placed the team third in the meet. The previous school record of 3:42.76 came in 2011.

Lyons ran 14.23 in the 110-hurdles and was just able to edge NAU's Vernon Jamison (14.25) for the title. Jones returned to win the 400-hurdles with a PR of 51.36. That time was the third fastest in program history and the fastest since Chris Santana ran 51.20 in 2004.

"My vision was for PJ to be the best dual hurdler in the Big Sky," Raske said. "For him to accomplish that as a sophomore is impressive."

Evlrom shattered his owns school record in the javelin with a throw of 239-06. That distance bettered his previous long by over eight feet and also set the Big Sky Championships record. Elvrom's throw was 34-feet longer than the second-place finisher in the event and eclipsed the championship mark of 232-01 from 1988. Elvrom's throw also ranks him eighth in Div. I this season.

"Our goal is to get Jesse to NCAA finals and hopefully be an All-American," Raske said. "He had his big throw early and then rested. He only took three throws in the meet because we want to keep him healthy."

Junior Zach Coniglio provided the first victory for the team by winning the shot put on Friday with a distance of 59-02.25.

Selected members of the team will compete at the NCAA West Preliminary, May 23-25, in Austin, Texas.
