SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- With the match tied at 2-2, San Francisco's doubles team of Sara Staengle and Valentina Zaloznik defeated Sacramento State's Jessie Genger and Sydney Kordic as the Dons beat the Hornets, 3-2, in a sand volleyball match Friday afternoon at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

The Hornets and Dons both moved their records to 1-1. Sacramento State, which is in its first year of sand volleyball, returns to action tomorrow afternoon when the team hosts Pacific at 1 p.m.

After trailing early, 2-0, the Hornets got wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to tie the match at 2-2. Sacramento State's No. 2 team of Kayla Beal and Katie Aprile defeated USF's Rebecca Kopilovitch and Jurja Vlasic, 21-17, 17-21, 15-13. At No. 3, it was Hannah Hettinga and Katelyn Ivy beating Anja Segota and Leanna Ludes, 21-18, 17-21, 15-9.

The tandem of Beale/Aprile is now 2-0 this season, including their win last weekend against Cal.

Genger and Kordic lost a tight match at No. 1 (21-17, 21-19) while Sloan Lovett and Lauren Aikels fell at No. 4 (21-18, 21-17), and Kelsey Elston and Breanne Menees lost at No. 5 (21-11, 21-16).

The Hornets are in the midst of a six-match homestand to begin the season, which includes matches against Stanford (noon) and Saint Mary's (6 p.m.) on April 7, and on April 13 against Cal at noon.

All home matches take place at the Sacramento Softball Complex on 3450 Longview Drive. No outside food or pets are allowed inside the complex.
