Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Five of the Hornets' six starters hit better than .390 as Sacramento State knocked off Jacksonville via three-set sweep (25-9, 25-12, 31-29) in the third and final round of the Hampton Inn & Suites West Ashley Volleyball Invitational Saturday afternoon at TD Arena.

With the victory, the Hornets finished the season-opening tournament with a 1-2 record. Sacramento State lost to host College of Charleston last night and NC State this morning prior to the afternoon win over Jacksonville.

Senior outside hitter Jessie Genger was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 4.40 kills, 2.40 digs and 0.70 aces per set to go along with a .289 hitting percentage over the three matches.

Hornet starters Ashley Newcomb (eight kills, .667), Janelle Currey (10 kills, .500), Kayla Beal (nine kills, .474), Genger (match-best 14 kills, .393) and setter Hannah Hettinga (one kill, .500) each hit better than .390 as Sacramento State finished the match with a robust .429 hitting percentage. In addition, middle blocker Chanel Coleman finished with three kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

Newcomb's eight kills and .667 hitting percentage were both career highs, and Currey's .500 hitting percentage was also a career best. In fact, Sacramento State hit at least .400 in all three sets. Hettinga had a career-high 45 assists and team-best 10 digs, and was the only player in the match to finish with double figures in digs.

Sacramento State held healthy statistical advantages over Jacksonville in kills (49-27), hitting percentage (.429-.128), assists (46-26), aces (12-4) and team blocks (7.0-2.0).

Libero Sydney Kordic continued her barrage of aces as the fourth-year senior finished the match with a career-high six, which tied for the second most in Hornet single-match history. Kordic now has 11 aces compared to just three service errors this season, and is averaging better than one ace per set (1.10).

For Jacksonville (0-3), Sammie Strausbaugh led the team with 10 kills.

The Hornets return to action next week when they host the 10th-annual Sacramento State Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Hornets will open the tournament on Friday night against Boise State at 6:30 p.m. For the complete schedule and other tournament information, click here.
