SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State split a pair of matches on Senior Day at Hornet Beach, beginning with a 3-2 win over Concordia before falling to Saint Mary's, 4-1.
Sacramento State moved its record to 12-13 overall, and the team's 12 victories are an ongoing program record (2013-pres.). The Hornets were playing their final home contests of the season, and seven Hornet seniors were honored prior to the match, comprised of
Ashlynn Archer,
Greta Davis,
Kate Doorn,
Mia Guevara,
Abbey Kadillak,
Mackenzie Natusch and
Karlie Spohn.
The Hornets' doubles tandem of Doorn/Guevara won both their matches today, and improved to a team-best 16-9 this season. The team is 9-5 at the No. 3 spot where they have played each of the last 12 matches. That includes a current four-match winning streak.
The 16 wins for Doorn/Guevara tie the program record for single-season wins by a Hornet duo, as Archer and
Ellie Tisko won 16 last season.
In the win against Concordia, with the score tied at 2-2, the match came down to Doorn/Guevara, who erased a 12-9 deficit in the third set and saved a match point before eventually winning, 21-19, 16-21, 16-14. Sacramento State also got wins at No. 4 from Davis/
Skyler Gartin (21-19, 21-19) and No. 5 from Spohn/
Keonahi'ilani Solaita (21-16, 21-18).
In the matchup with Saint Mary's, the 4-1 loss was much closer than the final score indicated, as the Nos. 1 and 2 matches went three sets before the Hornets fell in both.
Sacramento State does not compete again until April 17-18 when it plays four matches in Davis, including two against Santa Clara and two at UC Davis. Those are the Hornets' final non-conference tilts as the Big West Conference Tournament is the following week on April 23-24.
