• Off to its best start in 31 years, Sacramento State (16-4) will embark upon its toughest week of the season. The Hornets travel to Eugene, Ore., to compete in the three-day Jane Sanders Classic.
• Of the five games Sacramento State plays, two will come against a nationally ranked opponent (#18 Oregon) and one will come against a team ranked in the mid-major poll (#6 Nevada).
• The Hornets will open the tournament on Friday against Nevada (13-7) at 12:30 p.m. The Hornets just lost to the Wolf Pack at home on Sunday, 10-6, in a game the Hornets led, 6-4, in the sixth inning. The Hornets will also play tournament host Oregon (13-6) on Friday night at 6 p.m.
• On Saturday, Sacramento State will play Oregon State (9-13) at 12:30 p.m., followed by another game with Oregon at 6 p.m. The Hornets' tourney concludes Sunday vs. Oregon State at 10 am.
• All five games will stream for a fee on Big Ten Plus.
• The Hornets are 26-31 all-time vs. Nevada, and have lost five straight in the series, and 10 of the last 11. The two teams have played just five times on a neutral field (Hornets are 3-2).
• Sacramento State is 5-12 vs. Oregon, and 0-4 in Eugene. The Hornets have dropped five straight, and seven of the last eight to the Ducks. The Hornets dropped two games to Oregon in Eugene in 2021, both via mercy rule. The last Hornet win came via 4-3 score at home on March 21, 2000.
• The Hornets are 3-9 vs. Oregon State (1-3 on neutral fields), and have dropped seven straight in the series. The last win over the Beavers came via 2-1 home victory on March 1, 1998.
• Sacramento State's 16-4 record is the program's best 20-game mark since the 1995 squad began the year 17-3. That 1995 team won 40 games, and hosted an NCAA Regional. The Hornets' current winning percentage of .800 is the 23rd best mark in the nation.
• The Hornets had two lengthy winning streaks of nine games (Feb. 14-27), and four games (Feb. 5-7). The nine gamer was one shy of the Hornets' Div. I era (1990-pres.) record of 10, set in 2003.
• Sacramento State has yet to lose a neutral site game this season (7-0), and is a combined 9-1 away from home. The Hornets have won seven straight games away from home heading into the Jane Sanders Classic.
• The Hornet pitching staff has been incredible. The staff's ERA of 1.64 is the seventh best mark in the nation, and the team's 1.18 WHIP is ranked 23rd in the country. In fact, a Hornet pitcher has won the Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Week award all four weeks of the season. That includes
Alexa Ortiz being named three times, and
Kennedie Bacon named once.
• Bacon is 13th in the nation with a 0.88 ERA, and Ortiz is 26th with a 1.10 ERA. Not far behind is
Danyelle Leone who is 39th in the country with a 1.35 ERA. Ortiz (7) and Bacon (7) have combined to start 14 of the team's 20 games. Ortiz is also 20th in the country in complete games (5) and 22nd in hits allowed per seven innings (3.57). Bacon is ninth in the nation with three shutouts.
• All five pitchers on the staff have a record above .500, including Bacon (5-1), Ortiz (5-2), Leone (2-0),
Ella Ferguson (1-0) and
Kyndal Williams (1-0).Â
• In addition, a Hornet has won the Big Sky Player of the Week accolade twice in the first four weeks, including outfielder
Lafulafu Malepeai (March 2) and catcher
Katie Marsh (Feb. 16).
• What makes the Hornets' 16-4 record even more remarkable is they are playing without four starters. That includes outfielder
Andrea Lira (missed all 20 games), first baseman
Alexa Carino (missed all 20 games), second baseman
Jenna Birch (missed the last six games) and catcher
Katie Marsh (missed the last four games).
• The Hornets have four walkoff wins this season, including two walkoff homers by Malepeai.
• Speaking of Malepeai, she is having a monster year, leading the team in runs (16), homers (7), extra base hits (12), RBIs (21), slugging percentage (.820), walks (16) and on-base percentage (.494). She is one of three Hornets to start all 20 games (
Saskia Raab and
Madi Mendoza).
• Raab, a transfer from Nevada, leads the Hornets with a .417 batting average, and is the only Sacramento State player to reach base safely in all 20 games. Raab and Marsh both had team-high eight-game hitting streaks earlier this season.
