SOFTBALL PLAYS FIVE HOME GAMES THIS WEEK, BEGINNING TUESDAY VS. BOISE STATE

• Off to its best start in 31 years, Sacramento State (18-8) will play five home games this week, including a doubleheader on Tuesday vs. Boise State (13-17) at 1 p.m., followed by a three-game series with San Diego (12-14) this weekend. The Hornets will play a doubleheader Saturday vs. the Toreros at noon, followed by a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
• The Hornets have not played since a 4-1 home loss to Utah Valley last Tuesday.
• Sacramento State was supposed to play a three-game road series at Seattle U last weekend, but all three of those games were rained out.
• The Hornets are currently riding their first losing streak of the season (three games).
• All five games this week will stream on ESPN+ with Will Schilling calling the action. In fact, each of the next nine Sacramento State games will stream on ESPN+.
• The Hornets are 7-4 at home, but have dropped two straight at Shea Stadium. In 11 home games, Sacramento State's pitching staff has a 1.71 ERA while limiting opponents to a .235 batting average. Opponents are averaging just 3.1 runs per game, and have two homers in 77.2 innings.
• Offensively, at home, Sacramento State is batting .238 and averaging 3.3 runs per contest. Lafulafu Malepeai (.387), Addy Buckley (.350) and Shannon Garcia (.333) are the only Hornets hitting above .300 at Shea Stadium.
• At 18-8, the Hornets have their best 26-game record since the 1995 squad had a 23-3 mark.
• The Hornets' loss to Oregon State (3/8) was the Hornets' first of the season on a neutral field (9-1).
• A Sacramento State hurler won Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Week honors each of the first four weeks of the season (Alexa Ortiz three times, Kennedie Bacon on one occasion).
• The Hornets are currently 86th in the latest NCAA RPI report out of 308 Div. I teams. The next closest Big Sky team is Idaho State at 107.
• The Hornets have yet to lose a game when scoring first (12-0), and have yet to fall when out-hitting the opposition (14-0). Sacramento State is also 16-2 when scoring at least three runs.
• Sacramento State likes to do damage early. The Hornets have outscored the opposition, 42-18, in the first two innings. That includes 27-15 in the first, and 15-3 in the second.
• The Hornets are 4-4 all-time vs. Boise State, which includes a 2-2 record at home. Last season, the Broncos defeated the Hornets, 10-1, in five innings at Shea Stadium. That was the teams' first matchup since a 4-3 extra-inning Sacramento State win in 2020.
• Sacramento State is 29-14 vs. San Diego, and has won four of the last five meetings. However, the teams have not played since a 2015 matchup in San Luis Obispo (4-2 Hornet win). The Hornets are 11-7 at home vs. the Toreros. The teams played each other four times a season from 2003-2012 when both were members of the PCSC. The Hornets moved to the Big Sky in 2013.
• Despite allowing 34 runs over the last six games, Sacramento State's team ERA of 2.29 is the 14th best mark in the nation, and its 1.28 WHIP is 29th in the country.
• The Hornets have laid down 21 sacrifices this year (7 from Madi Mendoza), which is the 14th best mark in the nation. By comparison, opponents have sacrificed just nine times vs. the Hornets.
• Sacramento State has five walkoff wins this season, including two walkoff homers by Lafulafu Malepeai. The team's 7-6 win over Oregon State on March 7 was their most recent walkoff.
• What makes the Hornets' 18-8 record even more remarkable is they are playing without four starters to injury. That includes outfielder Andrea Lira (missed all 26 games), first baseman Alexa Carino (missed all 26 games), second baseman Jenna Birch (missed the last 12 games) and catcher Katie Marsh (missed the last 10 games).
• Nevada transfer Saskia Raab, who hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to beat her former team on March 6, had reached base safely in each of the first 25 games of the season until that streak ended last Tuesday vs. Utah Valley. Her .392 batting average leads the team.
• Hornet pitching has given up just six home runs this season, or one every 114 at-bats. By comparison, Sacramento State's offense has 22 round trippers, or one every 31 at-bats.
