SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Despite wins from Ashlynn Archer/Reese Ampi at No. 2 in both matches today, Sacramento State dropped a pair of contests. The Hornets began the day with a 4-1 loss to Santa Clara, and concluded things with a 3-2 loss to San Jose State.

The defeats dropped the Hornets to 3-5 on the young season. Sacramento State wrapped up the two-day Battle of the Bay, which began yesterday with a pair of matches in Berkeley.

Sacramento State has played each of its first eight matches away from home, and will remain away from Hornet Beach next week with a pair of matchups in Stockton.

Archer/Ampi was the lone Hornet pair to win against Santa Clara, claiming a 21-19, 17-21, 15-11 victory. In the matchup with San Jose State, Archer/Ampi won in straight sets (21-13, 21-15), while Sacramento State's No. 1 pair of Victoria Marthaler/Aurora Bibolotti won, 21-12, 21-23, 15-13. The Hornets dropped the other three matches to the Spartans in straight sets.

Archer/Ampi is a team-best 6-2 this season - all at the No. 2 spot of the Hornets' lineup.

Sacramento State is back in action next Saturday when they play a pair of matches in Stockton - vs. San Francisco at 10 a.m., and host Pacific at 2 p.m.
